The Avengers who could have been

No multiple-film set ups. No agonizingly long waits. Yes, here for your dining and dancing pleasure are Avengers teams of our dreams. And I have four awe-inspiring words for you, people: Paul Lynde as Loki.

In the summer of 2008, a “set-up” for a comic book superhero team was set in motion.

That set-up was the film Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr.

It was followed later that same summer by The Incredible Hulk. A few years hence, Iron Man 2 came along. Last year yielded Thor. Then Captain America: The First Avenger shortly thereafter.

All five films, in their own ways, have culminated to form this year’s much-anticipated The Avengers film featuring the beloved Marvel characters mentioned above … and more.

Can you imagine setting your sights so far in advance as to conclude in such an epic that will hit us this May? It hasn’t been done before … not to the extent we’ve seen to date. Not with so many different films coming into play. It’s almost inconceivable to be so forward-thinking, let alone patient.

On the other side of the coin, we have a couple fervent and hastily tossed together videos below featuring The Avengers “who could have been.”

Packed tight within these little gems are a bevy of Easter eggs and appearances and more fun than you can shake Thor’s hammer at. To name a very few: A Star Trek Talosian standing in as The Watcher … a comical Peter Wyngarde (General Klytus, 1980’s Flash Gordon) as a pornstach’d Tony Stark … Yul Brynner as Professor Xavier … and a Frankenstein Conquers The World monster of Frankenstein “doubling” for The Hulk. You just need to view the videos to enjoy all the fun.

And come on: Paul Lynde! As Loki! Paul Lynde, people! I would pay cash money to see that.

Have your popcorn at the ready before hitting “play.” Enjoy the show, folks:

But wait! There’s more! “The Snake Pit” by Mandingo was outstandingly spiffy ’70’s music used in the first video as title music! Here it is in all its glory! Lucky you!

And … did I mention: Paul! Lynde! As! Loki!

That was hilariously cheesy!!! But that’s okay, cuz I recently purchased a the “Greatest American Hero” DVD set.

Superheroes should be delightfully off center.

Pffft! Anyone knows the Avengers were really John Steed and Emma Peel!

I protest this silly movie :-)
