Milk: it doesn’t do my body good – Eat, Drink, and Be Snarky

131012552_74c0a6bc96Everyone has that one weird food thing, right? For some people it’s fish; they just can’t eat it. For others it’s red meat or sushi. I think everyone has some sort of food stigma that they can’t get past. For me, it’s milk.

I know, I know, it does a body a good, blah, blah, blah. It’s just not for me. I look at a tall glass of milk these days and it turns my stomach. I can’t even watch someone else chug a big old cup of moo juice. I wish I had the excuse of lactose intolerance like my two sisters, but no such luck. If I wanted to, I could drink as much milk as I wanted.

It’s completely illogical, I know. It’s especially crazy because I haven’t always been like this. As a kid I drank milk all the time. I had it in my cereal, drank it with cookies, I would even drink it with a meal. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but at some point I just couldn’t stomach it anymore. I rarely eat cereal anymore, and when I do I eat it dry. I can’t even drink hot cocoa that needs to be made with milk instead of hot water because if there’s anything grosser than milk, it’s hot, steaming milk.

There’s just something about milk, the slightly thick consistency, perhaps, or the way it coats the glass after you drink it. It might be the disturbingly pure white color, I’m not sure. Maybe it has something to do with it coming from a cow. I like to justify my craziness by saying that humans were never meant to drink cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is for baby cows. Even lactase, the enzyme used to break down milk fats, naturally degrades in the body over time. Nature doesn’t want me drinking milk!

Here’s where I get even more crazy. I don’t hate any other dairy products. I love ice cream, cooking with heavy cream, and all sorts of cheeses. It’s just milk in it’s purest form that gives me the heebie jeebies. Am I alone in this? Does anyone else share my distaste for milk?

Try some organic whole milk plain yogurt in your cereal, just enough to moisten it. Oh, holy yum! It’s almost like cream cheese!

What? I don’t want cream cheese in my cereal Now I think I may be turned off of milk. That sounds hideous.

Glad to read this — I also realized quite a while ago that I just didn’t care for milk, even as I use other dairy products like butter and cheese in great quantities. but then again, my food tastes are odd in many ways. I love tomato in every way except as a fresh vegetable. i cannot eat sliced tomatoes in any way, but cook with tomato sauces, diced tomatoes, etc.

That’s funny because I felt the same way about tomatoes for a long time. Somewhere along the way, though, I got over it and now I love fresh tomatoes.

LOL. I do get being grossed out by milk, even though it goes into my coffee daily. If I start to think about it too much…well, I really can’t do that because then I’d be in the same situation as you. Same with butter, maybe even more so.
