Arguably the best American Idol audition ever … yes, ever

After last week’s Hollywood drudgery on ‘Idol,’ was there any doubt the girls were going to take the guys to the cleaners? Nope.

“There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.”

No. I’m not talking about the contestants on American Idol.

I’m talking about the naysayers who continually *pooh-pooh* (and worse) the show. You have to kiss a few frogs before you get to the good stuff, you know.

You have to kiss a few frogs before you get to the good stuff.

If you’ve read over the years what I’ve had to say about Idol and its hopefuls, you know intimately how I feel about the auditions. There has got to be pain before there is pleasure … be patient, it will all be worth it … you never know what’s going to happen … ad nauseum. Still, I get heaps of ruination from hordes of folks out there — face to face, on the internet, more — about what a joke the show is. Convincing someone to watch the auditions is like trying to shoulder a mule from its backside to the work fields. It’s near impossible. (Those of you in the know know who I’m talkin’ ’bout, Willis.)

But you know what? Last night’s show came through. There was payoff. All my huffing and puffing was rewarded … and, arguably, with some of the best auditions the show has ever seen.

Right from the start there was the featured performance from Angela Miller to prove my point. If you haven’t seen it, go. Now. Watch it … and tell me if that isn’t one of the most moving performances for an audition you’ve witnessed. (Plus: It’s an original song by Angela, which is even more amazing given the history of offering something to the judges never before heard. Big risk factor there.)

We’re right smack-dab in the middle of caring about the players in the game on Idol instead of grimacing in disgust at the interplay being tossed between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

Of course, everything can’t be unicorns and rainbows and endless supplies of chicken wings on the show. One of my quirky favorites, Kez Ban, didn’t make the cut with her original (and painful, anything-but-protracted) piece. It was throwaway and almost pointless compared to what Angela committed.

In the end we got the pleasure this week of the girls trumping the guys and their previous Hollywood monkey business. I thought that might be the case … and it was.

Now we’re right smack-dab in the middle of caring about the players in the game on Idol (*whew*) instead of grimacing in disgust at the interplay being tossed between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. And thankfully.

We have some pretty nifty contestants headed to Las Vegas next week with the high hopes of some fantastic vocal output to wow us. And based on what we’ve seen — primarily from the gals — it’s not to late for some of you to jump on the band wagon and see what you’ve been missing.

Even if you are an Idol-despiser.

  1. Absolutely stunning performance…….. it was a nice surprise to be able to put down my ‘barf bag’ long enough to gets chills. I’d given up hope.

Stupid move on Kez’s part. I kinda liked her.

  2. Well… damn.

And to think, she has hearing loss! My favorite performance this season so far, including from her.

  3. Sorry it took me so long to get here, but AI is all DVR for me this season, and I just got to this episode. Didn’t want to read ahead of viewing.

In my never humble opinion, Angela’s performance here not only got her to Vegas … it got her through Vegas. Because her Vegas performance was not nearly in this league. I’m really afraid she is going to be brilliant one minute and remarkably average the next.

But I look forward to possibly be proven wrong. And maybe Angela’s skills are more writing than singing.

Do contestants do their own arrangements for the band of their original songs? If so, this gal has depth of talent and skills that won’t be stopped easily. The accompaniment on this song was as good as the singing.
