I hadn’t heard of The Big Bus or Colossus:The Forbin Project either.

I was just searching for the soundtrack music on YouTube last week. If you remember, this followed Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein” spoofs by only a couple of years. Those films were more plot based than “Airplane!” and its imitators and that is where “The Big Bus” creaks. But as you point out, the humor is less dated by avoiding the pitfalls of pop culture references (disco jokes anyone?). The swimming pool, the tire change, the flags of the world, the cemetery; it still has plenty of fun stuff (I love Murph as well).
Thanks for this review. It was such a pleasant treat to find.
