Having only seen the first one two days beforehand, I found it entirely beneficial to know what that scene was about and Josh’s backstory as a child. It may not be totally necessary to see the first one for some, but as this is a direct continuation of that story I think it’s extremely helpful. I’d be interested to know if you’re enjoyment of this one changed after seeing the first one, because so much is laid out in Insidious that comes to full bloom in Chapter 2.

And like you, I appreciate that this one didn’t try to go for the cheap scare with the overly-loud music. The first one was a bit heavy-handed in that respect.

I went to the screening on Wednesday not having seen the first movie (my wife went with friends), and I thought the movie was a good flick on its own merit. My wife mentioned that it was helpful to have seen the first movie as well, but I kind of felt like I was watching a horror flick interpretation of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which was fine by me. As someone who isn’t a fan of horror flicks, I definitely didn’t feel like this movie wasted my time when it wasn’t trying to scare everyone using cheesy music cues (which is probably the highest honor I can bestow on a horror movie). I might go back and watch the first movie to see if it gives new context to the action in the second movie.
