The first half of the newest season of Doctor Who comes to home video this week, but the big news is the high definition debut of two classic sitcoms: Friends and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Friends has been seen in syndication in HD for a while now, but this is the first time the complete series has been available on Blu-ray (could Seinfeld be far behind?). It’s nice to see early TV classics (the ones shot on film) making their way to Blu-ray as well. After the stunning work done on The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, it’s a real treat to see The Dick Van Dyke Show get a high-def makeover (could I Love Lucy be far behind?). It’s a slim week for new TV on DVD and Blu-ray, but fans of BBC America’s latest hit series Copper will be happy with the season one release on October 30th. If you missed A&E’s mini-series remake of the classic thriller Coma, that is also available this week. Classic TV fans are in for a treat — the day before Halloween! — with the long-awaited release of the final season of My Favorite Martian, as well as the complete All in the Family and Fractured Fairy Tales. Cable favorites and failed shows from last season feature prominently in this week’s home video releases. A few more of last season’s TV shows are hitting home video on October 9, including Bones, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, and Whitney. For the kids, there’s an all-new Scooby-Doo movie, two DVDs featuring the Peanuts gang, and some Sesame Street favorites. One of last year’s best and most Emmy nominated TV series comes to home video this week: American Horror Story. If you missed the first season, this is a must-see before season two begins in October (even though the seasons are all self-contained). Marvel at Jessica Lange’s Golden Globe winning performance (and Emmy nominated as well) as the creepy, Southern Gothic neighbor who knows more about the Murder House than she lets on. It’s one of the best performances of the year, and her final soliloquy is proof that she deserves every award she’s earned for the role thus far. And Lange will be back for season two playing a completely different character, so I’m sure she will be just as amazing. The final season (and a complete series box set) of Desperate Housewives is also coming, along with returning series such as Gossip Girl, Family Guy, and CSI.
