Saturday Night Live – Joseph Gordon Levitt/Dave Matthews Band

- Season 35, Episode 7 - "Joseph Gordon Levitt/Dave Matthews Band"

SNL Cold Open

Once again the guest stars came out for this one, including Al Gore and Mindy Kaling. Sometimes the show makes good use out of these guests, and sometimes they just stand off to the side as window dressing. Thankfully this episode wasn’t painful like last week.

Videos of some of the sketches embedded below.

Cold Open: Hu Jintao & President Obama — As much as I bitch about the politically-themed cold opens, this one made me laugh. one of the great quotes from this one:

“Will you kiss me?” – Hu Jintao
“I don’t understand.” – President Obama
“I like to be kissed WHEN SOMEONE IS DOING SEX TO ME!” – Hu Jintao

Monologue: Joseph Gordon Levitt — Only a quick brush with a 3rd Rock From the Sun, and a joke about his hair at the time. I really would have loved to have seen more 3rd Rock references and maybe even a quick stop in by John Lithgow to top it off. By the way, anyone else reminded of Heath Ledger when you look at this guy? Anyway, I was worried this would turn out awful but it wound up being pretty entertaining.

Commercial: Palin 2012 — Some YouTube yahoo could have thrown something like this together in a half an hour, yet it got a spot on SNL tonight. I like making fun of Palin like the next guy, but this was weak.

Secret Word — There’s this one skit from the past that I just cannot remember fully (maybe you can help), where I think the game show was The $50,000 Pyramid, and one person just cannot get the other to guess the secret word and then, with barely a clue at all, he guesses “Sugarbabies.” This one reminded me of that, but it just wasn’t as funny.

SNL Digital Short — You know you want it, so here are the lyrics!

Oh! It’s been a long time coming.
Two of the worlds greatest.
America’s sweetheart, Ms. Reba McEntire. (Yeah, yeah. How ya doin’ Andy?)
We’re about to take it to the top. (Hoo hoo hoo hoo.)
Hit ‘em Reba.

Haters in my face trying to keep me down
But you know we keep on shinin’. (Here we go!)
Two crazy big stars from opposite worlds
’bout to set this track on fire. (Yeah!)

She’s the queen of country
He’s the comedy prince
Making something out of nothing. (Ha ha!)
We hooked up in the studio to make this song.
But as usual we ended up fucking. (No doubt.)

Flash back to when I first met Reba
Sitcom dressing room, puffing on Cheeba
Said I was a fan, she said prove it
Dropped her denim skirt and said, “hop to it.”

Made love all night. (More like we fucked.)
Kids banging on the door trying to interrupt
But them autographs can wait, ‘cuz this is way too strong
I can’t leave it alone, because her pussy’s the bomb.

Well my pussy is the bomb and that’s a fact
But these N-words keep on trippin’. (OK.)
So I stay on my prime and drop these hits
‘Cuz I can’t go back to strippin’. (I’m Reba!)

You’re my undercover freak
And your my best friend, but our families don’t approve.
That’s right, ‘cuz I’m a city boy
And I’m a country girl, and I’ll never leave your sweet balls blue.

That’s because a girl like Reba’s got just what I need
With big broad shoulders and a red-ass weave. (And a penis.)
Hot damn, she fly.
All she wanna do is bump me
I’m a lucky guy. (I’m a guy too.)

My friends think I should dump her
They say she’s a man who found a wig in a dumpster. (Your friends are smart.)

Nah, Rebes, they’re just jealous
‘Cuz I’m dating a star instead of hanging with the fellas. (Hanging like my nuts.)

Word up. They’re just liars.
They can’t believe I can pull Reba McEntire.

Ever since I came out of my mama’s butt
I knew I was destined for greatness. (Yeah!)
I looked in a dumpster and saw a wig
And thought, “hey brother, I’m gonna take this.” (Tell ‘em, Reba!)

So I put it right on and took a stroll
Right over to 30 Rock. (SNL!)
I saw Andy Samberg and he thought I was Reba
And I made him suck my dirty cock.

So there you have it
Two worlds collide
We’re the new Bonnie and Clyde. (Reba.)
From haystacks to maybacks our love will survive
For Reba I’ll ride ’til the day that we die.

I’m Reba!

The Mellow Show with Jack Johnson — Loved the poke at the bare feet in this one (“Foot five to that!”) and especially making fun of Dave Matthews while he was the musical guest of the night. Almost wondered if it would have been funnier if the actual Dave Matthews could have made fun of himself, but his impression of Ozzy was unsurpassed.

What Up With That? — Al Gore made a great special guest for this skit, but Mindy Kaling did nothing at all…? What up with that? I started out not digging this segment in the past, but it’s definitely grown on me for living up to its name with its absurd guests and acts popping in.

Weekend Update — Oof, Al Gore calls out NBC being the “fourth place network” … on NBC. Totally scripted but you have to wonder who thought of slipping that one in there.

Angry Thanksgiving — I know this skit appeared once before, but has it been more than that? How different can you really make this year after year? Seemed like they just dug the script out of the archives and reused it this week.

Woman to Woman — I definitely laughed a few times at this one, probably because of how uncomfortable it is to ask someone to repeat something that’s uncomfortable to them, and in front of a whole lot of people.

Say Anything — Liked this movie at the time it came out, but the neighbor was that voice of reason that’s probably been in the heads of many people who’ve seen that scene from the movie and thought “oh, come on! Nobody does that!”

Musical Guest: Dave Matthews – Really, what can I say about the musical guest when he’s as popular as Dave Matthews and performs just as you’d expect? It’s when you get something unexpected that it’s worth getting into. I’ve always liked his music, but I’m no huge fan of his. What did you think?

Where can I find out what two songs the Dave Matthews Band played on SNL tonight?

The skit you are referring to is “Jackie Rogers Jr.’s $100,000 Jackpot Wad” from the mid 80’s. Martin Short was Jackie Rogers Jr., and Billy Crystal was Sammy Davis Jr. The word wasn’t Sugarbabies, it was Chocolate Babies. Really funny, but I remember my husband and I laughing from the word Japuti too. By the way, you can find the transcript of the skit here https://snltranscripts.jt.org/84/84pjackpotwad.phtml

I’ve never really seen Joseph Gordon Levitt in anything since 3rd Rock from the Sun and he has really grown into an entertaining actor. I usually hate the song and dance monologues, but he really sold this one.

I also think after seeing his Ozzy impression that Dave Matthews could do a good job hosting as well.

And once again Jason Sudeikis’s dancing made Whats Up With That.

DMB played You & Me and Shake Me Like a Monkey.

The Digital Short was hilarious! At first, I thought it was odd for Keenan to be playing Reba then when it turned out it was just a guy in a wig, the whole thing became classic.

And JGL had a long career before 3rd Rock and has done about 20 movies since that show ended. It’s nice to see a child actor who has grown up without appearing in the tabloids on a daily basis and continues to have a successful career.

Worlds Collide: Featuring Reba McEntire video

Another (see I’m On A Boat) in the continuing series of fantastic/hilarious rap videos from the Lonely Island boys.

Cold open

– Much better than people are giving credit.
The heavy sarcasm helped sell the entire sketch.

Angry Thanksgiving sketch

– Better the first time around when Will Ferrell did it
