A slew of DVD mini-reviews: Better Off Ted, Glee and Defying Gravity

Better Off Ted – The Complete First Season

The good: you get all of the episodes of the first season of this great comedy series, which is now in its second season (hopefully not its last, though it is in serious danger). The bad: that’s pretty much all you get. There are no special features whatsoever, including commentaries. Nada. So, if you’re just fine with that, then you won’t be disappointed.

Glee: Road to the Sectionals (Season One, Volume One)

The review copy we were given only included the final disc, which has all of the special features. Of those, the best by far is the fictional featurette called “Welcome to McKinley!”, which is an hilarious introductory video by Principal Figgins to incoming students. No doubt this video will make it to YouTube some day and make the rounds pretty quickly.

Other than that special feature, some of the casting and audition sessions are cool, but the Q&A’s are pretty hokey and meant only for people who are WAY too interested in the personal preferences of some of the cast.

Defying Gravity: The Complete First Season

I wrote about what creator James Parriott had in mind for the rest of Defying Gravity, should it have continued on past season one. What’s weird is how this DVD set is called “first season” and not “series.” Wishful thinking?

As for special features, there’s really very little here. There’s a featurette that was created during the earlier episodes of the series, with some things the cast had to say about how excited they were about the show, what it’s about and the like. Ivey informed me that it’s been available on iTunes for quite a while now, so nothing new to see there. Then there are some deleted scenes, but no commentary.

So, if you haven’t seen the final bunch of episodes yet — since they didn’t air in the U.S. at all — now’s your chance.

That’s just a ridiculously bare-bones release for Better Off Ted. Even sadder is that such a beautifully decorated and shot show isn’t available on Blu-ray when it looks utterly gorgeous on the live HD feed.

With both this show and Glee I’m trying to avoid picking up individual seasons because I know I’ll want the entire run and hope the eventual Complete Series boxes will have additional bonus features. It took forever for Andy Richter.
