Will Life Unexpected’s Lux ever have a normal life?

For every step closer Lux takes to having a more normal life, she's pushed back two more.

I’m glad my life growing up wasn’t as nearly as complicated as Lux’s. Her life matches the show’s title, Life Unexpected so very well. From her new, very crazy parents to her relationship with Eric, now throwing in whatever her history with Valarie is, it is amazing she’s as normal as she is. She’ll benefit from having Tosha back in her life, but if Cate and Ryan continue down the path they are, she’s going to need more help.

It is a cliché for a kid to walk in and hear only half of a particular conversation, and get the wrong impression. In fact, I think it’s happened on this show at least once or twice. Lux, here, though, was lucky she heard the half she did. Ryan and her have always had a solid relationship, but if she’d heard him say that Lux wasn’t his kid, I’m not sure he could have explained that away as easily as he did later to Cate. Those words would have hurt her a great deal.

Tosha being back is good news for Lux. As much as she might seem like a negative influence on the new life Lux is building, she’s not. Lux is a giver, and having Tosha there to fulfill that role gives her a kind of purpose that she’s not had since her new life started.

What I’m not sure about, though, is Lux’s previous relationship with Valarie. The letter and pictures indicate that it was not the horrible experience that she’d told Tosha about. Lux seemed very emotionally impacted by reading the letter. Whatever the story is there, it’s obviously one of those moments that had had a huge influence on shaping who Lux is, and is a story I very much want to hear.

I’m one of those people that thinks that relationships shouldn’t be based on lies (based on what I see on television these days, I’m in the minority). Just when you think Cate and Ryan made some progress on their differences, she pulls the birth control out of the trashcan. Whether or not to have children (or how many) is one of those massive questions you should probably have fairly well worked out long before the proposal, let alone the wedding.

I sure hate it for Math. Paige is a virus … She burns down the bar, steals money from Cate, and now has broken our favorite teacher’s heart (Because Eric? Not so much). She’s fun enough because she causes some drama. And more drama is on the way, the way she cozied up to Eric at the basketball game.

Notes & Quotes

  • “And you know the moment I knew [Paige] was amazing?” – Math
“When she did a shot without her hands?” – Baze
“When she ordered the halibut and asked if I knew it was sustainable.” – Math
“Not where I thought you were going with that….” – Baze
  • “There’s no dibs in dating … you can’t call takebacks or shotgun.” – Math, who obviously missed the How I Met Your Mother premiere
  • I know Emma Caulfield won’t be in all of the episodes, but her presence was certainly missed here.
