Bones – The nuisance in the romance

In spite of a case that delights, Booth's new girlfriend? Majorly detracts from this episode.

- Season 6, Episode 5 - "The Bones That Weren't"

I don’t want to be the bitch around here, and Lord knows I don’t want to complain in every column I write, but I’ve checked around, and it’s not just me. Booth’s new girlfriend, Hannah? She’s kind of … off.

I don’t think it’s just me wanting to see Booth and Brennan together that’s making me say this, because I’ve never really minded their girlfriends or boyfriends in the past, unless they were murderers. And I’ve never really minded the show keeping them apart. But for some reason, Hannah? I mind her.

I don’t know, she just seems sort of flat to me. I’m not a fan of the actress who plays her (Katheryn Winnick). The way she speaks has always bothered me, and her line delivery has always struck me as super-fake.  She also seems very immature to me. First in her looks — I’d easily buy that she was Booth’s daughter from an unfortunate high school interlude, which has always made her scenes with him feel extra-icky. Not to mention the way she acts. Gallivanting into danger is all fine and good, but the way it’s framed, as an adrenaline rush, makes it seem pretty bratty, instead of endearing. And the final scene where she demands Brennan’s sunglasses? I think it’s better we just not talk about that. I’m not even sure what to say about that. What’s the verbal equivalent of making the awkward turtle hand motion?

There were lots of good things, though! I am reliably informed by many denizens of the internet who are more scientifically knowledgeable than me (read, everyone) that Angela’s use of lasers to create the fake blue skeleton was wildly inaccurate and that lasers do not work that way, but then again, do I look like I care? It was so cool. I want them to do that every week. And I enjoyed the various buskers; tWitch from So You Think You Can Dance was actually quite a good actor, and Sweets with the bronze Shakespeare was delightful. For the first time, I really would have preferred less of the interpersonal aspect of this episode and more of the case.

I didn’t mind the lasers, no matter how unrealistic they are, because that’s TV science. Facts rarely matter unless they move the story along.

But the people in this episode? For the first time in a long time, I found myself getting annoyed by almost all of them. Bones seemed more robotic than she has in a long time, and she also seemed to be a little…dumber maybe?…when she had to have Cam explain something to her.

Booth’s reaction to Hannah’s pursuit of a story seemed very unBoothy. He’s always been very justice-minded, and I don’t see why the thought of crooked cops didn’t bother him more. Maybe because it wasn’t crooked military or Feds?

As for Hannah herself, I don’t mind the actress or the character, but she and Booth have zero chemistry. While I hate the forced plots that do keep Booth and Bones together (because some of it’s unnecessary), I haven’t always disliked their past relationships. I liked Andrew Hacker and that FBI agent from season 1 or 2 (can’t remember) that Bones dated. I didn’t mind Booth dating Cam or hooking up with his mother’s son. But Hannah…bleh. And I’m with you on the sunglasses. At first I thought she was teasing, which would have been OK, but then making Bones give her sunglasses? Who does that?

Bones is one of my favorite shows, but this definitely wasn’t one of my favorite episodes!

Of all the things to complain about I wouldn’t pick the robots. They used to use the 3D holographic tech, so having a little science fiction to the show is nothing new.

I hate the girlfriend, but didn’t mind this episode. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. At least the last few I didn’t like at all, this one I just stopped caring. Bones seemed off too me, she was naive at times and not at others, it was just weird.

November 5, 2010 at 1:29 PM

The girlfriend speaks like English isn’t her first language and she’s memorized all her lines phonetically. She doesn’t emote which makes her character too close to Bones IMO.

The Hannah – Booth relationship brings nothing to the show other than a writers crutch to avoid addressing the Bones – Booth situation brought to a frenzy last season and carelessly discarded for this one.

If anything this episode made me dislike Hannah’s character even more! I totally agree with you in that her rushing off deliberately into danger is just stupid. She obviously cares nothing for Booth if she’s constantly putting herself in some adrenaline-pumping situation. That part at the end with her demanding Brennan’s sunglasses was just weird. She reminded me of someone spoiled or at least akin to a bully, demanding she be given a gift because she was an invalid (which was entirely her own fault anyways!)

On a good note, I also thought the laser part was freaking awesome! Totally different from the usual skeletons they have to deal with. Even if it isn’t realistic, it still added an interesting twist to the show.

Same complaint, different episode. All the same complaints from haters is getting repetitive. Come up with new arguments. If all you’re going to do is complain about Hannah in every episode she’s in, don’t watch those episodes. Your whole review is your Hannah complaint. Really? This coming from a former Booth/Brennan shipper. Former, because I just don’t see any spark between them anymore and I don’t even care if they ever get together, at this point. I’m over it.

The episode, as a whole, was good(IMO). Hannah doesn’t bother me. I like her. Katheryn is Canadian. It’s not her fault the accent comes through. In this episode, it feels like she’s finally found her footing. She’s going to be around for awhile. So, it’s good she’s found it. There’s still some fleshing out, but I think she’ll get it.

Loved that the case was at the forefront. Brennan is in the lab more and that makes me smile. Sweets didn’t annoy me, this week. Cam, Hodgins and Angela are always a delight. I may be in the minority but I liked the Booth/Hannah scenes, as well. It’s good to see him happy and I think they are cute(despite what others think). However, I have one complaint. I miss Booth being at the lab interacting with everyone. I’d love to see some Cam/Booth and Hodgins/Booth scenes, again.

A root cause is a root cause even if it manifest in different ways so yes, it’s quite possible that the complaint won’t change with several episodes. Still, you are likely in the minority in loving Hannah, but the minority still gets to have an opinion so thanks for sharing! :)

November 5, 2010 at 3:26 PM

That is not a way to write a review of a tv show. Bashing the actress. How about you focus on the case etc.

November 5, 2010 at 11:42 PM

Jen: I’m not sure this was meant to be a review of the episode. While I don’t necessarily agree with Julia on all counts when it comes to Bones, her criticisms are valid.

Moreover though, we don’t necessarily aim to recap or review a particular episode. There are tons of websites out there that do that for you. One of our mottos is “Big Voices, Little Censors.” We watch, we have opinions, and we share them. Like them or not, we stand by them.

Its not about being a hater (Me realizing how much I was hating writing about Bones is why I don’t do it anymore, and Julia does). But if a show we love disappoints us, believe you me, you can read about it here :)

November 5, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I love Hannah and Katheryn it is not her fault the way she speaks. She is French/Candian, shame on you for being so mean!

November 5, 2010 at 3:32 PM

Bones fans are the nastiest, rude, people I have ever met online. This reviewer is no better. I think Hannanh is great and she and Booth are beyond cute

November 5, 2010 at 4:59 PM

THANK YOU!!! *claps* Yesterday was ridiculous! There is no spark between DB and KW. It’s painful to watch. The actress is terrible. Her delivery is off. There is nothing good there. It makes watching Bones hard.

The end scene was a major WTF! If this is Hart Hanson’s brilliant idea to make us like Hannah, he has failed!

November 5, 2010 at 6:52 PM

Agree with some of the other posters – why are Bones fans so vicious? I’m going to assume that these catty fans are females and are jealous of Hannah’s good looks (they probably identify more with frumpy Brennan. I think Hannah is great – light, fun, and really nice to look at!

Also Katheryn Winnick has always had that accent.

November 5, 2010 at 7:14 PM

There’s a reason why FOX can stick the show anywhere they want to and still it gets the same ratings. It could air at 9pm on New Year’s Eve and it would get it’s regular share.

So no wonder people get protective over their beloved show.

I find it cute that you don’t like Booth’s new gal because she’s so much younger than him. I’d say that the longer the show’s on the air the more realistic this gets and when you look at how old Boreanaz is now it fits perfectly :-)) Not having any chemistry and her having a strange accent just sells it more for me. Because, you know, he’s SOOOO dating her because she has a beautiful mind like Brennan. Yeah. Right. :-D

November 5, 2010 at 7:42 PM

I don’t get the fuss. First, I don’t understand the voice thing. She’s Canadian…its not like she has much of an accent. And she’s one year younger than Emily D., making both of them within 8 years of the age of David B.

And, I think they have more chemistry than B&B. Guess I’m the odd (wo)man out!

November 5, 2010 at 10:00 PM

What has happened for me during this season is bigger then Hannah, I can see and admit that. Unfortunately though, no matter how hard they try me it is not her fault, I will always lay the blame at her feet, because they have worked so hard to convince us that Hannah is the reason for all of the changes going on for our characters. And the changes are what I dislike the most about what is going on. Not how Brennan is growing emotionally, but the other very un-Bones like things that are happening. I am sorry but last night’s episode felt like a Hannah centric episode and it just felt wrong. I don’t buy anyone who says they are not a B&B shipper, but a long time fan. I am sorry but if you have been with this show from the start then not being a shipper is IMPOSSIBLE. Part of why this show is so powerful and works well is because the writers gave us this amazing story that has organically grown over the last five years into this beautiful (sometimes stressful) dynamic. I have never before felt like I was watching a romance/drama with a little case and science thrown in along the way. I always felt like the case and the science were the center of Bones and all of the other side stories grew from and developed along with that. It felt real and believable, watching bonds forming and this little group of people growing into this amazing ensemble working in this high tech, unsavory environment doing what’s right and becoming. I never found the drama of will they, won’t they a problem because for me all along they were: plain and simple. Even when other characters where there to act as lovers for B&B, while I was like whatever!, I never felt it was wrong or not cohesive because they were there but only peripherally and they didn’t change any of the dynamic. Actually in most cases they enhanced that dynamic and added a fine layer to an already multi-layered dynamic. Even with all the outside drama I never felt like I couldn’t stomach it, that the group was in danger, or that the characters were no longer who we have been told they are because of it. And maybe that is the real intentions here by the writers. Maybe we are all supposed to see that the center is gone and nothing is right. That this doesn’t work without Bones and Booth together. That everyone is lost without them there together, holding it together. The cohesiveness and flow will be gone with them not as a couple and that is why when they do finally put them together they will be able to sustain the series because it will be right again, and Bones will be back and we can do high level drama with a couple. If that’s the case then I think not only will it work, but it will be amazing – but this right now, well not so much! And how much do you sacrifice along the way to make a point that most of us already not only get, but support? Everything is off kilter and I feel like they are compromising the characters in order to create something so non-organic and forced that I am resentful and critical instead of absorbed and impressed. I am so angry on Angela’s behalf that they are trying to write Hannah as Brennan’s new best friend it is totally off putting. Those moments should be between Angela and Brennan sharing in her life – NOT Hannah! The supporting characters have been lost in this muddle and it affects the flow and my interest levels in the storylines. I feel bad on their behalves. It is like they are there but missing at the same time. I miss the richness they bring to the stories and a glimpse here or there is not enough. Hannah’s over bearing attitude comes off as offensive to me – I’d slap her for trying to take my sunglasses, just saying. That scene was so weird and did not come across as her trying to reach Brennan on her level. All I kept thinking was what now you took her guy and you are going to bully her for her sunglasses? Wow, she really is a selfish, bratty 12 year old (plus the juice box thing just screamed look at how wrong this looks – he looks like her Dad!) And in that moment I knew no matter what I was never fully going to like Hannah, she would always be the bully that came in and made a mess of my show. It was really just one of those moments that had me going, huh? They want her for Booth, fine. I even might understand some of the reasoning behind why. But it is so beyond reasonable to think in season 6 you can bring in this character write big storylines for her and have her just settle so neatly into this comfy-cozy role. Cases seem to be secondary while shoving Hannah and all of the changes at us seem to be first in line. Nothing feels organic or as if it is happening and while we don’t like what is happening on the romance front at least the flow is there, the dynamic is there and it is a graceful part of the story they are telling. I miss the flow, the chemistry, the intrigue. I am not having fun watching the show and that is the worst part. I know the journey is part of the process, not just the end and all that blah, blah, blah – but this is one journey that I would rather not take. I was reluctant to get in the car but I did because I was told trust us, we all know the end destunation and it will be amazing once we get there. I just didn’t foresee the route that we were going to take. The scenery is pretty enough to look at but after about 5 minutes it becomes boring and I find my self dying for a rest stop!

November 16, 2010 at 5:56 AM

Totally agree, well said. I wish i never started to watch season six, it has totally ruined the characters i´ve been in love with from the show started. What saden me the most is the lost of Booths character, i can´t see how they can get me to ever like him again after his betrayal to everything he ever was and beleived in.

Maybe to save the show they could make Booth really move on with Hannah. They can get out of the show and we can get back like from the start and Brennan can get a new partner.

I can not stand to watch it anymore as it´s just plain painful.

November 5, 2010 at 11:52 PM

Ugh! My problems with this show go beyond Hannah and KW now. That has to be the worst casting ever. But sadly, Bones has bigger problems. Their cases are very weak. They are not the least bit interesting. As the weeks go by I wonder what happened to this show. Week after week it is nothing but gimmicks and theme episodes. HH has turned into a lazy writer.

I hate what has become of my favorite show. So sad.

November 5, 2010 at 11:52 PM

I find it funny that people are actually defending the actress for the accent she has on the show! Personally, I don’t think her accent is bad, but it certainly isn’t good. She’s playing an American, she needs to get it down better. It is called acting. Imagine if the Mentalist’s Thomas Jane had an English accent despite the fact that his character is obviously American. Lest I even bring up Kevin Costner’s accent in Robin Hood.

Hannah is just another unfortunate obstacle in the inevitable Bones/Booth pairing. What is unfortunate about it is:

A) It’s obviously an obstacle.
B) They, have many here have pointed out, have zero chemistry.
C) Booth acts differently, and not in a good way, which rightfully irritates fans
D) The change in C has made something scarily apparent:

Faith has made an amazing point, and very succinctly nails the entire problem I have with this entire season. Somehow, in someway, Bones and Booth completely lost their chemistry. And it is completely ruining this show for me.

So what good did it do to get the fingerprints of the RIGHT hand on the drinking glass? They had the LEFT hand print on the plastic!

November 6, 2010 at 2:42 PM

I am disgusted at the this review and its attack on the actress Winnick. You say that you checked around and people have the same pov on Hannah. Really? didnt ask me or my friends that who think that Hannah is great and that she is so good for Booth. This my first review post but I lurk and the same haters are posting the same thing at various boards, reviews, twitter. Like Gina, one of the biggest haters, rude and aggressive on the cast and to other bones fans, posts everywhere, has several twitter accounts, so how is this the reflective of general povs, when it is the same people saying over and over again. There are fans who like Hannah, myself included and would be nice not to think that .you speak for the entire fandom with your broad sweeps of what people think. thank you for your time.

November 6, 2010 at 2:47 PM

I think that Hannah is adorable. Booth and Hannah are adorable. I am not apart of the nasty and mean Bones fans that seem to get a kick out of bashing, much like this reviewer it seems.

November 6, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Man, I am so glad that Hannah fans are speaking up. And calling out just what a rude bunch a lot of the Bones online fans are. There is nothing wrong with her and happy to have her on the show and with Booth, they make a cute couple

November 6, 2010 at 2:59 PM

LOL I find it so funny that fans are bashing when Emily got called far worse when she started. Reviewers noted wood and door and wanted her to be recasted. And her sister Zooey is just plain awful at times. Her stint on Bones as Magaret was far worse and cringeworthy than anyone who has ever appeared on the show. So all you haters Hannah is not that bad, I actually have warmed to her.

November 6, 2010 at 8:02 PM

I completely agree with you about the Kathryn Winnick and her horrible acting. I was stunned when they actually showed the scene between her and Booth talking about the story…her acting was so bad and she sounded like she didn’t speak English… it made me feel awkward as a viewer the scene was so bad. I have never minded gf/bf in the past but I can’t stand her. Thank you for finally pointing out what the rest of us fans have been thinking all along. It also is painful how young and immature she seems compared to Booth

November 6, 2010 at 9:10 PM

The whole Hannah/Booth/Bones thing is not the problem. I agree with the posters that mention how the show has changed. Firstly, I have to say, I am from North Dakota so I don’t even hear KW’s accent because we all have it here… lol.
It seems the whole dynamic of the show has changed. It is hard to bring in a new character permanent or semi-permanent after so many years, I think that is why they never replaced Zach with another assistant however, it was good that Sweets was added but he adds some comedy and a different aspect of science to the show.
The whole thing has changed though, not just the B/B/H issue but Hodgins and Angela are married and she is pregnant, she has been a free spirit for 5 years, now she has changed. Hodgins chased her, now he does not have to, Cam seems distant from the whole thing.
I think they need to get back to the original dynamic they had to bring this all back together.

November 7, 2010 at 10:56 AM

@Sebastian 11/05, Boreanaz OLD???? Just by your remark, I can see that you are INCREDIBLY JEALOUS of DB. He is TEN times better looking than you. THE GREEN EYED MONSTER. Come on, why don’t you admit your jealous of him!!!!

November 7, 2010 at 1:29 PM

THANKS! KW’s acting is annoying (it seems like she’s plain reading her lines) and nothing compared to Deschanel’s. Plus there’s zero chemitry between KW and DB, their relationship looks lame and forced, I don’t buy that couple as a viewer.

November 7, 2010 at 1:52 PM

KW’s acting is horrible and where were all of you Hannah/Kathyrn defenders when Brennan/Emily was being bashed weekly? The hypocrisy in this fandom is astounding! This season is so bad compared to the others and it’s not all because of Hannah but she is a factor. People not to stop deluding themselves into thinking that Bones isn’t about Booth/Brennan. The thing that sets Bones apart from the dozen other crime procedurals is their relationship. Hart, David and Emily make it perfectly clear that’s what the show is about.

If anyone has a problem with that and the fandom’s love for BB then maybe you should watch another show and leave the fandom.

November 8, 2010 at 3:24 AM

Booth & Brennan have lost all chemistry, by the time the writers put them together, no one will care.

November 9, 2010 at 12:40 AM

I think Katheryn Winnick who plays Hannah is such a great actress. Just saw her in Killers, and now she’s about to come out in Love and Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhall. Here’s her facebook page:
