Hawaii 5-0: Do not go into the bedroom

OK, guys, if I said it once, I'll say it again: if you’re in town for illicit activities, and Megan Fox’s double hits on you, DO NOT go upstairs. Repeat. DO NOT.

- Season 1, Episode 9 - "Po'ipu"

I’m beginning to think that male operatives are the new horror flick virgins. I stated this in last week’s Nikita review and I’ll state it again. Dudes, if you’re evil, in the middle of evil doing, and an attractive woman inexplicably flirts with you, you will probably die before the show’s end (or, you know, get caught). Do you doubt me? Watch Undercovers — season one, episode two. Watch Nikita – season one, episode nine. Watch any episode of Leverage featuring Sophie. Seriously. This is a public service announcement. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Clearly it’s ex-partner month on Hawaii 5-0. This week we meet one of McGarrett’s former military intelligence operatives. Did I like this week’s episode?  Heck, yes. Why? It incorporated the entire team, used Kono as more than a doorpost, and balanced the Danno-McGarrett interaction.

Every time the writers feature the gang working together to solve a crime (with old school detective work), I nod my head to the original. First off, Kelly Hu works well with the cast and serves as a believable intermediary between the governor and McGarrett. Second off, I loved watching Chin Ho train rookie detective Kono in casing the crime while demonstrating his video composite mastery. Another bit of old school detective work I liked? Listening to McGarrett and Danno suss out the suspect old school 5-0 style while sitting at the conference table. While I wanted the entire team in on it, they appeared five minutes later. Plus, it showed us a McGarrett-Danno interaction outside the typical bromantic banter. Other things I liked? Chin Ho as a major rifle badass, watching Kono take down a suspect without the previous “hot girl” fireworks, and McGarrett’s crazy hot knife sheath. Seriously? Where did that come from? Overall, 5-0 are the hottest group of people rocking bullet proof vests anywhere.

Also, this week the writers balanced the McGarrett-Danno bromance, rather than giving us concentrated 15-minute doses. I especially liked the ending when Danno urged McGarrett to find better friends. In an interview regarding her character, Taryn Manning stated Mary Ann ideally served to humanize McGarrett. Although I hope her character remains incognito, McGarrett’s confusion at his friend’s betrayal followed by Danno’s comfort and the re-affirmation of their bond with a 90210-esque “I chose you” moment, did a better job of showing “McG’s” human side. While the car is basically Danno and McGarrett’s version of pillow talk, which did you enjoy best — Danno’s jealous boyfriend mode or McGarrett calling him on it?

Random Thoughts:

  • Hawaii 5-0 has given up all pretense of making the landscape relevant and opened with blatant scenery porn.
  • Hawaiian Actor Shout out: Matt Corboy, who played the murdered Atwater, graduated form Punahou School in Honolulu while Michael Adamshick, who portrayed Tom Matthews, rocked the Hawai’i actors network.
  • Seriously, that poor house is just a terrorist magnet.
  • While I love the shout-outs to the Garden State, have any of the writers visited New Jersey? Hello. #1) Everyone vacations at the shore. #2) A true New Jerseyian would have more than just postcards of the “garden state.” (what, I don’t know, but I’ll pretend there’s something more we’d rock) #3) What, McGarrett? You say only three singers originated in New Jersey? Hello, what about Sarah Vaughann, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Count Basie, the Fugees, Kool and the Gang, Sugarhill, and Dizzy Gillespie? As for dancers, don’t forget Dule Hill! Shh. There, there now. Just be silent and look pretty. Good job. However, props to the writing staff for continuing to work in Danno’s New Jersey connection. Plus, double-props for McGarrett requiring a written wiretap request (a la Danno episode one) for any car changes.

Quotes:

“I get that you were built without a censor button.” – McGarrett (to Danno)

“Do you realize how much of your life revolves around food?” – McGarrett

“I’ll get real Jersey up in this piece.” — Danno

“You’re good.” – Danno
“I know.” – McGarrett

“We can hire her to kill herself.” – Danno (on the week’s gun for hire)

“Blatant scenery porn.” I’m giggling over that. You’re right of course. The show is fun and delightful. And there’s pretty everywhere you look.

Thanks! I’m definitely enjoying the show more and the prettiness doesn’t hurt ;)
