Castle – The butler did it!

The team is called to the home of a lottery winner who has been murdered. And the more they learn about the victim, the stranger the case becomes. We also get to see a very special "Awwww" moment between Castle and Beckett.

- Season 3, Episode 14 - "Lucky Stiff"

I’m kinda glad that it turned out Reginald (Alastair Duncan) wasn’t the killer. If he had been, no way I could have used such a spoilery title. And really, I was just as excited as Castle at the prospect of the butler actually doing it. So much so that when the steely gaze of the law once again turned on him, I was ready to buy in. How do you resist such a temptation?

Of course, we now know it was York (Joe Reegan) behind the murder. But getting there was quite the adventure. The writers did a nice job of dismissing him early on. Things were so crazy with Hixton (Skoti Collins) that the story of him just giving away his car was plausible enough to move on. And with suspects as intriguing as Oz (Wilmer Calderon), and the Page brothers (Brian Michael Jones & Josh Wingate), it was rather easy for York to get lost in the shuffle.

The lottery story framing the episode was fun, but also interesting for the little character bits it brought into the fold. I especially liked hearing a little of the Castle history, and his revelation that the thing he truly valued was the freedom the money had brought him. The offshoot of Castle’s thoughts on the lottery that was also very cool came when we found Beckett quoting Castle to Martha. It’s another subtle little signal as to just how close the two of them are getting.

That was followed up later by an amazing “Awwwwww” moment when Castle revealed the plan to put together a scholarship in honor of Beckett’s mother. That little shared moment was just the kind of thing so many viewers have been waiting for. And it was just about perfect. At least until the Dr. Josh alarm went off in my head, which kind of mixed up the whole thing.

Dr. Josh hangup aside, it was another very fun case, with a couple great moments for Castle and Beckett. For a random February episode, you can’t ask for much more than that.

Great review! It was a really good episode, if not my favorite of the season. The Castle/Beckett moments were awesome. I can’t think of a show that has done a better job of character development with the leads. This show can do no wrong in my eyes!

I don’t know if you caught this but on of the funniest moments for me was when Beckett was trying to sing the Page Brothers’ rap song with her guitar. It just made me laugh when I realized what she was saying. Great episode for me.
