Poll – TV couples that we’re glad broke up

As Valentine's Day is just around the corner, we here at CliqueClack debate the relationships whose demolishing filled us with the most schadenfreude. Because we're all incredibly bitter.

Personally, I’m lucky enough to have a sibling that was born on Valentine’s Day, so even before I was in a relationship, I’ve been able to focus on my brother’s birthday on February 14th rather than my lack of romance. But let’s face it … on V-day or any day, couples can be annoying and TV couples doubly so!

Whether sickening sweet or just wrong for each other, there are certain couples on TV that we despise seeing together. In fact, when their coupling finally bites the dust, we band of brothers at CliqueClack are known to openly celebrate the relationship’s demise — this happened just a few months ago with Rachel and Finn on Glee.

To make things simple, we only added couples who are still broken up or stayed broken up by their series’ end (sorry, no Ross and Rachel on here). Still, there were plenty of annoying couples to choose from and my fellow Clackers had many, many different opinions (including some old school choices). A few of the more outspoken voices are below:

Kona: “Ann and Andy on Parks and Rec. I couldn’t stand his character during the first season, so I was glad when she finally ditched him. Since then, Andy has become hilarious, so it was really a win-win.”

Ivey (note: our fearless leader Keith asked me to add Spike and Buffy): “I have to say that I nearly un-friended Keith for the suggestion of including Spike and Buffy on this list. I just can’t believe it. To me, this question is either Chase and Cameron or Izzie and George. When you look at it, I basically hate anything about Chase, so I can’t blame House here. But Izzie and George? This was a relationship that almost ruined a show single-handedly. The season before Izzie/George, the show averaged liked 22m viewers. That dropped down to 15m.”

R.T.: “Maybe Foreman and Thirteen in addition to (or instead of) Chase and Cameron? I personally was rooting for Chase and Cameron to last but was glad when Foreteen broke up, but maybe that’s just me.”

Bob: “I never really minded them together, but I seem to recall the fanbase getting pretty upset when Barney and Robin were a couple on How I Met Your Mother. The consensus was that it neutered Barney, who is generally at his best when he is the womanizing creep that we have all grown to love.”

Me: “I had to add Pam/Roy and Don/Betty because we not only cheered their destruction, but knew without a doubt that they were wrong for each other. We knew they wouldn’t stay together forever, so when they did split, it was a relief — at least for me. Other that than, I’d probably have to choose Dwight and Angela the second time around. I would have been shocked at that choice back in Season 3, but when Angela became a super-hypocrite by cheating on Andy, her romance with Dwight lost all its charm.”

It’s time to vote, people. Did we miss your all-time most hated couple? Stick it to us in the comments!

Why was Barney and Robin from HIMYM mentioned, but the only HIMYM voting option in the poll is “Ted and Robin”?

And I’d also like to say a show-changing breakup was Jules and Josh on Cougar Town, it was the beginning of end of the “cougar” focus of the show, and signalled the transition to the more common sitcom topics Cougar Town now features.

My vote is for veronica and duncan. But since I can’t actually vote for it I’m mentioning it here.

Veronica And Duncan. I hated Duncan and was so happy to see them not only break up, but see him leave the show.

I quadruple nominate Veronica and Duncan. So much drama to reunite a couple with so little chemistry. Logan was always a better pay-off.
