This week, the relationships went Off the Map

'Off the Map' takes a step back this week, as each relationship turn is plain disappointing.

I’ve talked about how show has steadily improved over the past several weeks. This week? That streak doesn’t continue. It isn’t that things were horrible; they just weren’t as good as they have been. The episode was marked by new relationships that don’t add up, and others taking turns I’m disappointed to see. Considering the quality we’ve seen recently, I’m sure things will get back on track, and we’ll hopefully be able to put this episode in the rear-view mirror.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but I’m not exactly happy that it looks like Ryan Clark is headed to New York for a heart transplant (likely not to return). I practically wrote a love letter to Rachelle Leferve’s character a couple of weeks ago. I like her and Keeton (Despite certain clackers not agreeing), I like her and Zita … Hell, I just like her. But leaving makes sense. Between that and Mateo seemingly out of the picture, things have nicely opened up for the Keeton/Brenner relationship that everyone knows is an inevitability. Plus, there is a spoiler that commenter Kate K shared with us last week to factor in.

This whole thing between Fuller and Minard just doesn’t make sense. Oh, it does from a character standpoint. Fuller is a dog, and she was … well … looking for a connection she could act on. And, apparently, “old lady spit is dangerous.” But from a story standpoint, it doesn’t work for me. Something has been building between Minard and Cole. I’m not sure where that story is going, but it is a bit more interesting than her and Fuller.

It is rather funny watching Aimee Garcia’s Alma character. I’ve only seen the actress in one other thing (the criminally underrated Trauma), and her character was so incredibly different. EMT/Chopper Pilot Marisa Benez was all kinds of badass, where as here, she’s as sweet as a sugar-cone. It is just odd seeing the actress play such a different character.

Notes & Quotes

  • Speaking of actors that I can never get past a particular role … despite the grand collection of character work that Dean Norris has on his resume, he’ll always be the CO from Starship Troopers to me.
  • “What is with Birth de Soleil?” – Minard, seeing the local customs of birth for the first time
  • As someone who has been a lifeguard for the last fifteen years, the question posed in next week’s preview is very easily answered.

I thought the show took a sharp turn in another direction this week, as if the showrunner realized that things were developing that she hadn’t intended (Keeton/Ryan, Lily/Matteo, Minard/Cole, Fuller/Alma) and quickly put a stop to them all, returning to the really obvious neon-sign storylines that lost my interest in the first few episodes of the show. Lily heroworships Keeton and he looks out for her – let’s put them together but throw in the roadblock of a comatose wife. Minard and Fuller are the pretty newbies, let’s put them together. Cole and Zee are leftover so let’s create a history for them and put them together too.

I also wasn’t impressed with the birthing plotline. It’s got to be the fourth or fifth time the show has used the “the kids don’t understand the culture so they screw up” plot. The way Zee was acting, you’d think Minard had started a cultural war with them.

About that spoiler for Rachelle Lefevre? Same goes for Martin Henderson. Looks like someone else has picked up on their chemistry.

I’d heard about Leferve before you shared it in the last post, but Henderson is big news to me. Kinda changes the dynamic of what’s going on, too. Taking renewal out of the equation for a bit, it means that Leferve isn’t necessarily being written out.

The Crossing sounds interesting enough, and it is good to know that Leferve will have a darn good chance to being on TV next year whichever way the cookie crumbles.

On a different note, can Paulson get cast in something good for Pete’s sake? This looks pretty bad.

Don’t look at me. I liked Studio 60 and I even liked her in Cupid.

What would you like to see her in?

Can you remind me of the significance of the the title “It’s a Leaf?” I’m drawing a blank.

It’s what (sexy, breath-of-fresh air) Matteo said as Lily dumped him for the second time at the end of the episode because he was growing coca plants “It’s just a leaf”.
