PodClack – Episode 33: Talkin’ ’bout the Squad

In this episode, Jay's joined by clackers Carla Day, Kona Gallagher, Debbie McDuffee and Keith McDuffee to talk about the old and new days of TV Squad.

Welcome back to another episode of our PodClack podcast. Make sure you tune in and make your friends tune in as well, and comment and rate us on our iTunes page!

Every week (or kinda-sorta every week), Brian does a TV guide keyword search based on a word someone leaves in a comment here, so sure you leave a word for Brian’s next movie look-up!

Please keep the comments coming and let us know what you think. Got suggestions? Questions? We’d love to hear ‘em! Make sure you get everyone you know to subscribe to the PodClack in iTunes (and rate us, please!) or via some other feed — we feed Jay’s ego a careful diet of traffic numbers and subscriber count, so let’s not let that sucker die of starvation. You can also check-in via GetGlue!

Thanks for listening!

Mother of God, I AM NOT A CRAZED LIBERAL!

The readers always assumed I was a liberal because I never went way over to the right. I was never extreme right enough for them, ergo I must be a lefty hippie, like Meathead on All in the Family.

Great podcast. For the record, AOL bought Weblogs in late 2005.

. . . . .

What the hell?!??

Bob’s not a crazed liberal … !??!! What next? No Santa Claus … !??!??

Yeah, whenever there was a post attacking Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly’s latest ravings (and there seemed to be one or more per day), I immediately knew it was written by Danny Gallagher, not Bob Sassone.

Don’t know about the “liberal” part, but “crazed” seemed an appropriate appellation.

Oh I remember that well.

Can Carla post that posting that has the comment leading people over to CliqueClack? I want to see if I was one of the people whining about the lack of content that led someone to put that there.

I swear I also got an email about CliqueClack. I guess that was the glitch Kieth was talking about when the commenters were getting the auto reply. Though it helped me find this site so I wasn’t one of the people getting annoyed.

Thanks! I wish there was still a way for me to track down all my old comments, but they removed that feature with the redesign.

Thanks ac and Carla, I was just about to ask for that link.

Not trying to brag (much) but I “think” a posting exchange between Akbar and I about Keith and the merits of CC predates Franklin’s. (May the alter ego Franklin rest in peace.)

AC: I was there, and seemingly much more positive than I felt at the time. As a response of both of TVS’s disappearances, i had doubts as to what was actually going on. I’ve always had a personal distrust of everything AOL, as a family member “used” to work for them, and was downsized a couple weeks before Christmas, but offered a job with the new company outsourcing company taking over her job, at like a third of the pay.

In the long run, though, it was all for the good. TVS was kind of my port of entry into finding people who liked talking about TV, and helped me really define my appreciation of the medium. CliqueClack, though, is the community that I wanted to be a part of.

Yeah in the comments for this one I just asked a quick question and that was it and was willing to continue with the site. Before they addressed the issues however I’m pretty sure I was one of the people thinking the site was shut down and/or all the writers were fired. Guess I was 2 years off my assumption. It wasn’t out of a general mistrust of AOL, just in how easily sites on the web can go broke in general.

Yeah TV Squad served its purpose in gaining the base of writers and commenters together thanks to a better budget to get things to the front page of Google. Helped us appreciate TV on a different level. Then this site came along and made it possible to discuss it on a better level that doesn’t resort to yelling about liberal conspiracies created by Bob Sassone.

Wow my comments probably would go over that 500 word limit you have at TV Squad…

Wow — such a wonderful roundtable! I could have listened to you guys dish the dirt for another hour. As it was, I played the podcast twice in a row to truly absorb it all. And Debbie’s voice was different from what I would have expected, or at least less Bostonian.

Since the Skype conference worked, perhaps all involved would consider doing this on a monthly or quarterly basis? The next one could be about one of Carla’s shows so she could have more to say.

I had never tried to find out about any of the Weblogs/AOL behind-the-scenes happenings, so this was riveting. I remember being utterly mystified as to the reasons at the time, and have avoided mentioning TV Squad or CliqueClack by their full names, as I was unsure of the delicacies of the situation.

It’s a reflection of how useless TV Squad is now that I had no idea Jay and Kona were still writing for it. I’m sad that they were finally cut. Kona, though I didn’t watch Medium, I did come to enjoy it vicariously through your episode reviews.

I’ve missed Cinematical very much, and their feed is such a mess that I was unable to follow an article from the Moviefone app to their site to read the comments — simply unusable. I’m relieved that TUAW seems as of yet unaffected by the reorganization.

I feel a little guilty for not having the time to keep up with the site, but will check out CliqueClack Flicks next.

Just catching up to this podcast… fyi AOL bought Weblogs Inc in 2005. And Kelly Woo left on her own accord; she works for Wetpaint.com now. Fun listening at 2:45 in the morning…
