Gender bending is coming to Futurama – CartoonClack

Good news, everyone! 'Futurama' is coming back two weeks from today, and Comedy Central has released a clip worthy of the internet and all it's fan-fic glory.

There are very few things I’m looking forward to this summer more than Futurama (the only other things I could think of off the top of my head were RvB:TO and the release of Deathly Hallows Pt. 2). You might have noticed from this column that I am serious about my cartoons, and Futurama is at the tippy top of my TV obsession list. Since joining the CliqueClack team back  in the fall, the only Futurama episode I’ve gotten to write about is the Xmas special, so I am just thrilled to get into reviewing the rest of the season.

The mini-season begins on the 23th with two episodes, and Comedy Central has posted a short clip from the first episode, “Neutopia.”

First and foremost, I love seeing Bender as Coilette again (last seen in “Bend Her”). John DiMaggio does a really funny feminine version of Bender’s voice, and I’m sure it is going to be hilarious. I also have to give the writer’s credit for taking the normal gender-bending story and turning it on its head: instead of the men having a horrible time adjusting to female bodies, they’re having the time of their lives. I’m a woman, but Fry’s comment on men buying him stuff make me laugh all the same. I’d bet by the end of the episode the “ladies” will realize womandom isn’t all shopping and free drinks, but not before giving Leela and Amy a hard time.

I really like the designs on the swapped characters; bringing back Bender’s Coilette look was a smart choice. I also like the subtle changes they made to Fry, Zoidberg looks pretty for a big, freaky mud bug  and even with his mustache intact, Scruffy’s body is sick! And does anyone else think Hermes looks a heck of a lot like Shirley from Community? Hey, it’s a good look for him. I really hate Amy’s haircut, but I’m digging LaBarbera’s facial hair. Is it weird that I’m critiquing the characters’ re-gendered looks in this much depth?

Probably.

The upcoming episode is interesting because I am sure this basic plot can be found somewhere online already. After all, Rule 34 (“If it exists, there is porn of it.”) can be applied to fan fiction as well. I have no doubt there are dozens if not hundreds of Futurama gender-bending stories out there on the internet — but thanks to the hedonistic nature of fan-fiction, I’d suggest only the bravest of hearts go casually browsing for them … you might not like what you find.

The episode on after “Neutopia” is “Benderama,” which involves Bender making trillions of smaller copies of himself. It’s based on a real scientific theory unceremoniously named grey goo, and the episode will feature the immensely funny Patton Oswalt and will include a “Scary Door” scene, which all equals hilarity. We’re getting thirteen episodes in the last leg of this season, with the last episode (“Futurama Reincarnation”) being a non-canonical 3-piece look at the show through different animation styles … including anime, which should be fun. Not all the episodes have been scheduled, but it looks like we’ll be getting Futurama episodes through September at least. And best of all, we’re already guaranteed another twenty-six episodes after this season. Hooray for us and hooray for Zoidberg!

I’m pretty sure everyone has read the info about the new pick up order wrong. The show was picked up for 13 more episodes with an option for another 13. One of the voice actors came out and said that.
