The gorgeous Legend of Korra teaser – CartoonClack

We still have a year until it comes out, but the trailer for 'The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra' is so very, very pretty. It does my little fangirl heart good.

I love Avatar: The Last Airbender. Unlike it’s crappy movie adaptation, the original show is a multi-layered epic, with great characters, beautiful animation and just the right amount of humor. Appropriate for kids and mature enough for adults, the story of the boy destined to bring harmony back to the world had a lot of action, but also had so many strong and varied female characters for little girls to look up to. No matter how you look at it, it’s a great show and some day I’ll devote an entire CartoonClack post to explore my love of this great show. But today isn’t that day. Today, we get to see the Legend of Korra trailer. TLA’s panel at Comic Con gave us a lot of new info about the new series, and while I didn’t get to go to the panel nor the Con, the blessed internet was there to bring me this glorious trailer.

For those of you who haven’t heard, The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra is about the next Avatar after Aang, who is a teenage girl from the Water Nation. Since the Avatar is always the reincarnation of the last, Aang is obviously not in the series. However, we will get to meet Aang’s now grown up son and Korra’s airbending teacher Tanzin, played by the great J.K. “Cave Johnson” Simmons. Korra has already learned water, earth and firebending, so the series will focus on her journey to master airbending and finish her training. I’m super excited about this aspect because airbending is the only form we haven’t seen taught in the TLA universe. I do question why they are calling the sequel The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra when Aang’s son — and his grandchildren — were born with the ability. Wouldn’t calling it Avatar: The Legend of Korra make more sense?

Anyway, what immediately struck me about the trailer itself is how absolutely gorgeous it is, with a stunning new setting (a multicultural city Aang and Zukko built together) and updated animation. The fluidity of the different fighting styles kept my eyes glued to the screen, and I immediately replayed the video after it finished the first time. I wish we could have heard more of the voice acting, but they were going for visuals in the trailer, and I get that. Plus, I think we got to hear from Korra’s very Sokka-like friend — an earthbender named Bolin — at the end there.

The Legend of Korra is coming to Nickelodeon in mid-2012. The Comic-Con panel also included more insight into the story and characters; a member of the panel’s audience was gracious enough to write up a summary over on lytherius.com. According to him, the antagonists are part of an anti-bending organization with awesome steampunkish outfits. There was originally only going to be 12 episodes, but they’ve boosted it up to 26 episodes — that’s a change I can get behind. Also, it turns out Toph had a daughter named Bei Fong who heads the metalbending police force. Shocked that Toph had a daughter, now I’m going to have to wait a whole year to find out who the father is! Man, sometimes being a fangirl is tough.

The video was the most beautiful cartoon I have ever seen. The “central park” area was so beautiful. I can’t wait!

What’s great about a trailer like this is it inspired me to go onto Netflix Instant and rewatch a bunch of my favorite episodes of the original series.
