Wonder Woman: Strapped or strapless?

Should everyone's favorite Amazonian warrior be 'supported' or otherwise? Where better to end the controversy than at the just concluded San Diego Comic-Con.

Given all the talk-talk that’s come before, I thought this might be a fun assignment. I mean … where better to quash the controversy than at the annual gathering of all things comic and all things geekdom, the San Diego Comic-Con?

Here was the proposition: Keep my camera at the ready while at The Con. Any Wonder Woman who came within eye shot, snap a photo. The numbers would be the proof in the pudding where straps or no straps were in question. Sounded pretty reasonable to me.

And with that, the experiment commenced. The results are below and they’re conclusive beyond reproach. I even nabbed a comment or two in the process to round things out and add a little color.

Ready? Here we go …

Yeah … I know you can’t see whether or not the girl on the right had straps, but she didn’t have’em.

Score: 2 points go to strapless

Yes! That illustration counts! Go back and read the rules I put out there for myself before I even started this whole endeavor: “Any Wonder Woman who came within eyeshot, snap a photo.” She counts.

However, we have a little problem with the completely adorable little girl on the right there. How could I not include her? But! Her costume presents a problem. Hers is neither strapless nor strapped. So she falls in an “Other” category.

Score: 1 point to strapless, 1 point to “Other”

Okay, here we go with a strap version of Wonder Woman’s outfit. (The guitar-playing Mad Hatter approved of the straps. I wonder why …) And a simple T-shirt. Hey … I told you: When they come along, they come along. T-shirts count, too, in this little venture.

Score: 1 point to straps, 1 point to “Other”

Our contestant on the right above has got an interesting version of the Amazonian princess’s garb. I obviously have to give her a point for straps, regardless of the fact she’s wearing a tube top type of deal. (*pssssssssssst* Strap on the swag bag WW is holding on the left doesn’t count.)

Score: 1 point to strapless, 1 point to straps

No grey area here. Both are strapless. (Yes … the figurine counts. Get off me.)

Score: 2 points to strapless

Here’s another one that’s tough to tell, but the costumed poser on the left above is strapless. The ‘Vampira’ Wonder Woman on the left, however …

Score: 1 point to strapless, 1 point to straps

Another figurine! And a pretty representative one, if I do say so myself. But! there’s another T-shirt. Had to get that one in the mix.

Score: 1 point to strapless, 1 point to “Other”

Well, looky here. It’s our very own Mr. West gettin’ his pitcher taken with a Wonder Woman wannabee. It is a joy to see he’s obviously a card-carrying member of “Team Strapless” without doubt. The boyfriend of the accommodating girl in the photo specifically pointed out that what she was wearing wasn’t a true Wonder Woman costume. (It was the flip flops that gave it away for me.) And that little dialog from him, dear readers, opened the door for me to ask: “So … should Wonder Woman be sporting straps with her top?”

The answer? “Hell no! She’s Wonder Woman! She’s a superhero! She doesn’t need no straps!”

Score: A resounding 1 point to strapless

Final tally? Strapless: 9 / Straps: 3 / Other: 3 And there you go. Complete and total randomness wins the day. Wonder Woman’s costume should remain strapless. Period.

Won’t you join us next year? I think I’ll do a post on the facial expressions of Darth Vader.

Excellent scientifical study, Mr. Noble.

Building upon this research, next time please note whether any of the real-life Wonder Women are doing high-impact activities, such as running through the streets whilst apprehending bad guys, and when possible please note their BR (bounce rate) and WMO (wardrobe malfunction occurrences).
