HIMYM – Where I don’t talk about Lily’s boobs

'How I Met Your Mother' sees the return of a favorite character from the first season. What kind of impact will she make on Ted's life six years later?

- Season 7, Episode 3 - "Duck Tie"

I’m not going to lie; I was excited to see Victoria in last week‘s How I Met Your Mother. But where could her story go from here? It would be wrong to have her play an ongoing role in Ted’s life, but could she stop by for an episode, and make a lasting impact? The answer to that question was a surprising yes.

I was a fan of Ashley Williams before she guest starred in the first season (Yeah, I watched Good Morning, Miami … so sue me) . She was famously the backup Mother should the show not go past thirteen episodes (What a novel idea by showrunners to plan their first season that way). But it wasn’t to be, and I think her last words to Ted in this episode will last a lot longer in his mind. And considering the import of those words, it leaves this Barney/Robin fan more than a little worried.

I’m on the record that I think that Barney and Robin will get married later this season (I think that he will intend to marry Nora, but there will be a last minute “switch”). But a reflective Ted, at least as far as Robin is concerned, is bad news in my book. Unless Ted is the catalyst for Robin to truly examine her feelings for Barney, my theories might be in trouble.

But will they really? If you believe everything Narrator Ted (and showrunners Carter Bays and Craig Thomas) has been telling us, present Ted will meet the titular mother at Barney’s wedding. I’m still theorizing that Ted will eventually wed Barney’s mentioned, but not yet seen, sister Carly. So, for those keeping score, Barney marries Robin, Ted marries Carly.

And they all live happily ever after … with Lily’s boobs.

I’ve got the “Ted’s Ex-Girlfriend” run that they did at the beginning of the episode quoted below, but there was a longer run that wasn’t included in the aired version. I’ve got it here for you:

Notes & Quotes

  • “Oh, guess who I ran into: A girl from my past. Any guesses?” – Ted
    “Stella?” – Lily
    “Zoey” – Barney
    “Karen?” – Marshall
“The girl who beat you up?” – Lily
“The girl who ruined a photo with Slash?” – Barney
“The girl who made you get the butterfly tattoo?” – Marshall
“Wow you make it sound like I’ve dated a series of Steve Larson novels.” – Ted
  • “OK, I’m sorry, pal, but the party in my wife’s sweater is a private event and I’m the bouncer.” – Marshall
[motions towards Lily’s chest] Dude, I think they’s the bouncers.” – Robin
  • “Oh, no we’re not together. We dated for like a year, but now we’re just friends. It’s not weird.” – Ted
“No, why would that be weird? I mean if you hung out every day that would….” – Victoria
    “We do.” – Ted
“….still not be weird. You know, I don’t know if I know anybody that hangs out with their ex every day.” – Victoria
    “Barney does.” – Ted
    “Really, who’s Barney’s ex?” – Victoria
    “Robin.” – Ted
    “Your Robin?” – Victoria
“Mine and Barney’s, yeah” – Ted
“You don’t all three hang out together?” – Victoria
    “All the time.” – Ted
And we have weird.” – Victoria
    “What’s his name?” – Ted
    “Whose name?” — Victoria
“Your fiancé to be?” — Ted
“Oh his name is Klaus.” – Victoria
    “Klaus?” — Ted
    “Klaus.” — Victoria
    “German name.” – Ted
    “Yeah, German guy.” — Victoria
“Hmm. When you were living and Germany and we were doing the long distance thing, wasn’t there a guy in you class named Klaus?” – Ted
“There was a Klaus in my class.” – Victoria
“And, you and Klaus were close.” – Ted
    “Not that close.” – Victoria
“Yes, yes, you and Klaus from your class were quite close.” – Ted
    “Kinda close.” – Victoria
“Was that your Klaus?” – Ted
    “My Klaus?” – Victoria
    “In your class.” – Ted
    “In my class?” – Victoria
“Is your Klaus the kinda close Klaus from your class?” – Ted
  • “I let you come wash my dishes. I said my oven needed cleaning … I invited you into a porno!” – Victoria
  • There’s a bit of irony that Ted wasn’t allowed to see Lily’s boobs, but he’s heard her have sex with Marshall … a lot.

ok after actually watching the ep i have to say..i’m back on Robin/Barney just from Ted’s last lines cause Victoria’s last lines point me the opposite way with his. It will take Robin and Barney getting married to really get Robin off his radar for good and boom he meets Barney’s half-sister

I just want to point out that in the notes/quotes section you have:

“Wow you make it sound like I’ve dated a series of Steve Larson novels.” – Ted

That should be Stieg Larsson. As in the guy who wrote The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest…which is where the joke lies.

I figured that was the connection, but obviously misspelt the name.

Thanks for catching it!

After a run of disappointing HIMYM, I think this episode was a rare return to form

I agree! I really enjoyed this episode and all the callbacks to old seasons. Also an episode without Nora (or w/e her name is) who I find really, really, really annoying ><

I’m sorry but who’s Carly and when was she mentioned?
