Revenge – Plans go awry and someone dies

Emily continues her plots of revenge, but unfortunately those plans go awry and someone is killed.

- Season 1, Episode 5 - "Guilt"

This week with episode five, “Guilt”, Revenge strayed from the revenge of the week format and that was a good thing. I and many others were wondering how the show would keep up the momentum with Emily going after a new person each week. Wouldn’t she run out of revenge-worthy people? I don’t think we have anything to fear after tonight’s episode. There is plenty of story to tell without Emily ending the day with a big red X.

Given that the Graysons were the main culprits in Emily’s father being jailed, I was surprised at how much energy she spent on getting revenge on Lydia. Though, she was the perfect choice to be the scapegoat for Emily’s previous endeavors. If Lydia didn’t die, I’m not sure how well it would have held up. Lydia was naive and wanted to be liked, but didn’t have the smarts to pull off Emily’s manipulations.

There is no way the police should let Lydia’s death go as a suicide. Conrad, Frank and Nolan’s fingerprints were all over her house, so I hope that doesn’t just get brushed under the rug. There should be ramifications for their actions. In this case, Emily’s plans went awry and someone died and it doesn’t look like hers will be the only death that Emily’s set into motion. Nolan has proof that Frank was involved, but I don’t think it will be as simple as him turning over the evidence to the police.

Unrelated to Emily, I’m intrigued by Tyler’s story right now. Why did he really come to stay with Daniel? He definitely has an end game with interfering in Daniel’s relationship with Emily, getting him drunk, ratting out his father, but what is it? Nice potential foreshadowing that he borrowed a suit from Daniel. They are the same size … could he be the one that got shot on the beach and not Daniel? We learned that Frank will do anything to protect the Grayson family.

Overall, I really want to know what Emily has planned for Daniel. Emily made it clear to Nolan that Daniel is part of her plans. How exactly is she planning on using him? He didn’t do anything to her, but she hasn’t stopped her so far. Emily had sex with Daniel, but she didn’t really seem to be enjoying it. Perhaps that was just the weird voice over about guilt though. I thought she might really care about Daniel until I saw the way she looked at Jack in the police station. This love triangle is definitely a complicated one. I’ve understood the motivation behind what Emily has done so far, but I don’t know if I can accept her taking advantage of Daniel (unless there is something we don’t know) and making him pay for his parents’ mistake.

Nice recap!
I reallllly hope it is Tyler that got shot on the beach instead of Daniel! I totally didn’t put 2 and 2 together on that one. Great catch! He definitely has more up his sleeve than just trying to “help” Daniel out with a girl that’s not right for him. Lame excuse.

I hope it’s Tyler on the beach as well, because I actually like Daniel’s character. That being said, I believe that Tyler is trying to worm his way into the Grayson family and become like a second son to them (possibly to take over Daniel’s place?) He is enabling Daniel’s drinking yet acting like his protector, getting himself a job in Daniel’s father’s company, they wear the same size suit, etc. Maybe Tyler is the one who had Daniel killed?

I really enjoyed this episode. However, I had one little nitpick. Lydia had a magnifying glass readily available to check the picture. Who does that? How many people actually have a magnifying glass sitting out like that? It was just…weird.

Otherwise, I agree that I hope there will be repercussions from her death. Especially with how she and Frank were hitting each other, and she bit Frank. She should be bruised in places (like her face) that wouldn’t be caused by the fall. And it’s quite possible his DNA might be on her teeth or under her nails from her fighting back.
