Another Dexter theory: Louis the intern is Dexter’s nephew

CliqueClack commenters already got one big theory correct for this season of 'Dexter', and this new one sounds not only plausible but could encompass the remainder of the series.

We love our commenters here on CliqueClack. Wow … it’s great to be able to say that. Back in the days of TV Squad, we had a lot of not-so-nice folks (and a lot of nice ones, too) who frequented there, so to be able to make a blanket statement saying that we love our commenters is kinda nice.

Once in a while I get to read some fantastic theories by our commenters on the shows I post reviews for; sometime’s they’re right. Case in point: commenter Malik’s dead-on, early theory that Dexter’s Prof. Gellar was not real. I wish I could claim such theories for myself — and I guess sometimes I can, and do — but this was not mine, and was one that just seemed to brilliant not to write a post about. Now I think we have another winner, and it’s a doozy.

Commenter “Sean” left the following theory on one of my latest Dexter reviews, when I mentioned that I thought Masuka’s intern, Louis, was likely going to wind up the next Big Bad, next season:

Intern = 20 something. Brian = Dexters older brother. Dex hit a 20 year high school reunion last season, killed the dude under the stairs (useless information, just trying to shake your memory.) intern = dark hair, tall, bony stature. Intern = too interested in dexter, obviously. Intern = ice truck killer hand. == intern = ice truck killers son.

It’s a long shot, but think about it.

Oh, I thought about it all right, and that’s no long shot; I think we’ve got another winner here. It really does add up. Let’s look at some of the evidence:

  • Louis has a clear hero-like infatuation with Dexter, and it’s not likely to be because he knows of his serial-killing ways, nor his excellent blood splatter analysis. He’s excited to meet Uncle Dex, that’s why. He probably has no other living family.
  • We don’t know much at all about ITK Brian’s days before he entered Dexter’s world, especially his time 20 years ago, which would be about when he would have met Louis’s mother. It appears at first glance that Brian couldn’t be old enough to be the father to a 20-year-old, but remember, Brian’s Dexter’s older brother, and 20 years ago Dexter was about 18.
  • Not only is Louis infatuated with Dexter, but he’s got his eye on ITK’s past. Hence, that’s why he’s started to accumulate ITK props.
  • Brian Moser was an extremely tidy fella — remember the cleaned out body parts, sometimes all gift wrapped for Dex? Now go back and take a look at Louis’s apartment. Freaky neat.

EW recently posted portions of an interview with Showtime president David Nevins, who says the theme for the remainder of Dexter will kick off within the final two episodes of this season. I’m going all-in and side with Sean here. I believe we’ll get the reveal that Louis is Brian Moser’s son — Dexter’s nephew — and that he finds out Dexter’s secret. Actually, I’m feeling pretty certain about that first part, but I’m about 50/50 on Louis finding out Dexter’s secret. A more series-ending catalyst would be Deb finding out Dexter’s secret, and then her having to deal with that for the next two seasons.

So, is our commenter onto something here?

If true this theory would fit nicely with one of the show’s themes – the influence of fathers on their sons. Dexter has been really concerned about how Harrison turns out so this would give him a chance to see how Brian’s son turned out.

As I said before, I think it fits nicely. We’re not sure yet exactly how much Louis knows, but it’s obvious from the closing shot last week that we’re going to find out. My hope is that it’s Deb who finds out about Dexter this year, as that really opens things up for the writers moving forward and would be a good refresher to the show. (Not that it needs it; I’ve loved every season of Dexter and I have faith in these writers.)

That is a great theory. I love it!! What about Deb’s shrink? Anyone else getting bad vibes from her and her interest in Deb’s relationship with Dexter. I think Deb’s shrink (Dr. Michelle Ross) is The Intern’s (Louis Greene’s) girlfriend and partner in crime (or possibly his sister and thus Dexter’s niece).

With only three episodes left it doesn’t seem like there’s much they can do with all of this other than dispatch Travis and give us a cliffhanger ending as a setup for next season.

My prediction for next season is a major world of hurt for Dexter and Deb (as well as Batista and his Sister) from The Intern and the Shrink (and possibly a new big bad) complicated by serious grief from LaGuerta and Matthews and (sorry for the run-on) further complicated by Quinn and his knowledge of Dexter and Lumen’s activities last season (as well as his current downward spiral and Issues with Deb). Question is will Quinn remember that he owes Dexter one for not letting him take the fall for Liddy’s death.

An afterthought. Wouldn’t it be interesting if they brought in Dexter and Brian’s biological father and it turns out that he is a murderous psychopath also, (A Dexter family reunion) adding a practically undeniable genetic component to Dexter’s psychopathy.

December 4, 2011 at 10:56 AM

I think Dr. Ross is too old to be Brian’s daughter. She looks like she’s in her early 30’s at least. Also we’ve already dealt with Brian and Dexter’s bio dad, Brian killed him remember? (Episode 1×09 Father Knows Best) It’s already been established that he was more or less a normal dude, if a bit of a loner.

That wasn’t the ice truck killer hand. That was the hooker killed in season 1. Her fingernails were different colors. ITK’s son would only drag the show down further. They need to go back to what made the show great in the first place. It was the believable characters. It wasn’t the far-fetched storylines. It was Dexter.

December 3, 2011 at 10:38 PM

I’m pretty sure “ice truc killer hand” really just meant it was part of his things at Miami Metro, not his actual hand.

December 3, 2011 at 11:26 PM

It was more than just the hookers prosthetic forearm… the nails painted that way was part of his signature. Remember the fingertips in ice, the Barbie doll, plus prosthetics was sort of a fetish of the ITC. That hooker would have been dead much sooner if she didn’t have the prosthetic, it was only when she became a potential witness that he killed her. That hand is a priceless piece of memorabilia for anyone who idolizes the ITC. Anyone who would want it can only be bad news for Dexter.

December 18, 2011 at 12:20 AM

the fingernails they are important cause that’s how their mother painted her nails.

December 4, 2011 at 11:18 PM

Josh Cooke/Louis is actually 32 years old. Christian Camargo/Brian Moser is 40. I get that in television actors portray younger characters, but this would be ridiculous.

December 5, 2011 at 2:57 AM

that interns like 40. who thinks he is supposed to be 20?

December 5, 2011 at 3:21 AM

This theory is not possible! Manyyyy websites for dexter puts Louis in his 30’s…here’s a link for an example of one of the many that says it.. https://dexter.wikia.com/wiki/Louis

December 6, 2011 at 3:04 PM

louis is an intern which suggests he’s just out of college. Let’s not forget tom welling was about 8years too old to be playing a high school kid in smallville so it’s not unbelievable to think the intern is only supposed to be around 23. Brian was a troubled kid, he could have knocked someone up at 18 for all we know.

December 7, 2011 at 4:48 PM

No, I think Louis is Dexter’s “half”-brother.

First, he’s clearly older than a typical college intern. He’s also not a college kid. The only reason he’s interning is to gain knowledge of police procedure for his new video game.

Second, it’s been revealed that Harry had several relationships outside of his marriage.

Doesn’t it make more sense that Louis is Harry’s illegitimate son than Brian’s?

December 12, 2011 at 12:46 AM

Thanks for calling that out, Matt. I was right behind you. :-)

Louis is not college-age. He’s a pretty well-off video game designer just interning with Masuka to gain knowledge so he can make his game credible. He also idolizes Dexter, but it didn’t seem to me that he had any special interest in Dexter at first, so I think if anything comes of his relationship with Dexter it will be that he has a Dark Passenger of his own that recognizes Dexter’s. I don’t get the feeling that his reason for interning had anything to do with Dexter, just that he developed his hero-worship after meeting him. If any relation to Dexter, I would say brother, but that plot line’s a bit stale (surprise serial killer brother has already been done). I don’t have a theory regarding the hand just yet, but we shall see, I suppose.

Either way, I’m more interested to see what happens with Deb and the suggestion of the shrink. I literally almost threw up when that storyline appeared, so I’m on edge hoping they don’t actually go there. They *can’t* go there – screw biology. He’s her brother, end of story.

December 12, 2011 at 12:52 AM

BTW, if he’s Harry’s illegitimate kid, he’s really nothing to Dexter, just Deb. Which would make him obsessed with Deb, not Dex. Or both, but he’s clearly only on the Dexter train. Dexter wouldn’t consider him anything — he cares for Deb because he grew up with her, but at the beginning of the series he had an inner conflict between defending her, his adopted sister, against his biological brother, Brian. So, Louis would be nothing to Dexter, being neither biologically nor adoptively related. Louis would be either obsessed with both Dex and Deb, or just Deb, but not just Dex, if he were Harry’s kid. At least, that’s how it plays out in my head.

January 19, 2012 at 9:32 AM

Yeah true but I guess if so he would have been harry and laura mosers son who like brian, harry had covered up. This would make sense as Harry’s relationship was suggested to be of a sexual nature with Dexter’s mother. In which case he has an affiliation with dexter

After watching tonight’s episode, “Talk to the Hand” one thing popped out to me whichI feel many people are passing over. It has always been a guilty pleasure of the writers of Dexter (and im sure any screenwrite) to play with words whenever they can… And tonight’s episode had a dousie!

When Louis stopped Dexter at the elevator to “thank” him for his honesty about his video game in development, he mentioned that he has always been living on the sidelines, “in his video games.” He then goes on to talk about how he’s going to rectify this and make something of himself. Now, normally this wouldn’t be much of a smoking gun except for the fact that many people have been discussing the possibilities that Louis could be Dexter’s nephew. Now this COULD BE a possibility, and it’s also quite possible that Louis in fact, knows a lot more about Decter than he has previously let on.

EXCEPT! – When Dexter was stopped at the elevator, there was a awkward moment when Louis says “Looks like you have a minute” to which Dexter replied, “HAVEN’T WE DONE THIS BEFORE?”

Well color me crazy, but isn’t that a huge signal that Louis is yet ANOTHER half-brother of Dexter (and Brian) who has yet to hit his serial killer stride?! Just look at the signs: A infatuation with serial killers (as seen through his excitement about his video game). A meticulous attention to detail that both Dexter and Brian had shown throughout the entirety of the show. He even has similar features to both Brian and Dexter!

I realize I may be reaching here but I think the writers of this season have been dropping clues left and right (I.e. – Geller being dead the whole time), and Dexter saying his above line is just too perfect not to mean something. We even had a recent episode “re-introducing” Brian to our memories.

December 12, 2011 at 2:51 AM

Also, this just popped in my head:

When Louis drew the line in the ITK hand, he was using a red marker when all the other lines were black. Uhhh – can anyone say “BLOODLINE” foreshadowing?

December 14, 2011 at 4:53 AM

The two lines that Louis drew on the hand were the “Line of Life” and the “Line of Fate.” We shall see how that all pans out huh!

December 13, 2011 at 2:54 AM

I agree that Louis is too old to be Brian’s son – the character is not written as a “college kid”, but as a man who’s already amassed wealth through his video game programs.

BUT, he could be Dexter’s half brother through Dexter’s BIOLOGICAL FATHER. Who’s to say that Dex’s real dad didn’t father a son with another woman. And if Brian was able to find out about Dexter and his dark passenger, Brian could have, and most likely would have, tracked down any half brothers. Especially, half brothers with the same tendencies as himself… possibly taking Louis under his wing.

December 13, 2011 at 5:05 AM

My video player was cut off in the worst place… what did Louis write on the box?

December 13, 2011 at 6:05 AM

He wrote “Dexter Morgan”

December 14, 2011 at 11:59 AM

I think he’s tracking Dexter, accidentally, but now he’s caught on to him. He told Dexter to use the one Browser instead of Google. They show that Dexter is using that browser just about every time he’s on a computer. It has to have some significance

December 15, 2011 at 12:37 AM

I don’t think Louis has to be his brother to be infatuated with Dexter. I would think someone like Louis could easily get the connection to ITK without knowing of Dexter’s dark passenger or nighttime activities. His fascination could also be that Dexter’s wife was killed by a serial killer. All of that could have been discovered through his research for his game especially if he’s got skills, and the ITK hand could even just be fate, with masuka asking him to help get it.
His comment about being tired of sitting on the sidelines is a clear foreshadow that he’s the next big bad, but I don’t think he’s related. I simply think his video game murder obsession is going to cross the line into reality. Every season’s killer is having more aspects in common with Dexter, Louis could even be the product of experiencing a murder in his youth like Dexter had, possibly with an unfulfilled dark passenger of his own.

December 15, 2011 at 11:35 AM

Lu, you’ve made a good point. Louis and his “skills” could have, through research that was initially solely for the purpose of his game, found out about Dex.(I kinda still have a feeling they’re related, though.)

As for the ITK hand, he didn’t happen upon it by fate. He was the one who bought it, telling Masuka that he couldn’t track the buyer. This guy seems like he could pretty much track anything he wants. At best, if he wasn’t the initial buyer, he tracked down the original buyer and bought it from him/her. He definitely didn’t get it for Masuka, since we see that he was sending the hand to Dexter.

Whether or not he’s related to Dex, one thing’s for sure. He’s secretly a sick little pup… with skills.

December 17, 2011 at 5:53 AM

I hope that louis’s dark passenger is reveled in the last episode and he kills travis before dexter in the same way that brain killed his victims.. opening up dexter’s eyes that there might be a serial killer out there better than him..and like mike said, the search site could be created by louis and he is tracking dexter’s every move…

December 18, 2011 at 12:22 AM

My theory Is that Louis was actually in the nut house with Brian. Think of this Brian said”this has been years in the making.” I believe he must have made some “friends” or rather followers while away at the psych ward. That would fit perfectly with the age gap and why Louis is so infatuated with Dexter. cause lets face it brother Brian wanted nothing more then to murder and have fun with his little brother so im sure he talked about dexter often.making him up to be this hero in his and Louis mind. we also cant forget about intern number ! who stole the arm to begin with. One other thing I think Louis is getting more info cause the website he told dex to use

December 20, 2011 at 9:22 AM

I def think he could be Dexters nephew, but I dont think that Louis knows it. He may know that he is the son of ITK which would explain his obsession with the ITK hand and also the premis for his game. In his game you can be multiple serial killers including ITK. He prob has spent countless hours pretending to be his dad through his laptop and now is ready to “play” for real.

I want to go back and look at 3 scenes which I think will help.
1. Louis Apartment
2. The screne shot of his game when he shows Dex.

I think there may be hidden clues here. AND..

3. I think we need to look at the scene where he marks the hand with Palm Reading signs and why he used 2 different colors. There is definitely meaning here. Maybe he believes their lives are destined for each other, maybe its more.

My question is: Do you guys believe that Dex will devulge his Dark Passenger to Deb or will he try to cover it up saying he ran into Travis at the church and killed him. Acting like it was the first person he ever killed.

December 20, 2011 at 10:21 AM

Actually im mistaken. Louis doesnt say you can be ITK in the game he says you can be the Bay Harbor Butcher which Dexter replies in his mind “i am the Bar Harbor Butcher”. So just maybe somehow Louis knows this and thinks he can impress Dex by making a game about him.

December 20, 2011 at 10:30 AM

Also, wanted to add that I just looked up palm reading charts and the three lines that Louis marked in Red apear to be the Life Line, Fate Line, and the Line of Fame or Success. Thought that was interesting.

December 20, 2011 at 9:25 PM

I don’t think Dex will be able to lie to Deb about being the Bay Harbor Butcher. Travis is strapped to the table with plastic wrap, something Deb knew about the murderer’s MO during the BHB investigation. That, paired with Dexter’s boat, which he housed at a marina that was surveilled during the investigation, seems difficult for her to miss.

HI! My name is jack morrison, and i work with the dexterproducers.i’ve been told by my boss to reveal this: Debra morgan is a serial killer, well she has only killed a few in her past.the young dexter times with harry..debra has always known about the dark passanger. But promised harry to never talk about it.that’s why she didn’t want to see lumen and dexter in the fifth season.she can’t have dexter to know that she knows.she was suprised when she saw dexter killing travis because she has never seen him actually doing it.they will work together…dexter finds out he has a sister, i know it seems odd.but this sister is not a killer, she africanamerican,so she is his half-sister.but she suffers from mental illness. She had been accused of serious crimes such as robbery, assault and bad behavior of police officers.she has just kind of escaped from a rehab.captain laguerta get’s killed in a caraccident, batista get’s a little weird after that…masuka has his embarrassing moments for example:he wakes up naked at miami metro twice!,he flirts and get a transvestite home, it didn’t work out very well since she/he is famous and they are taking photos (masuka is very drunk) and shows in a lot of magazines,tv and the newspaper, good enough he doesn’t remember a thing from that night.over to harrison… he is a little older but it’s not set if he is going to stay in the dexterprograms.dexter get’s accused of murder.but he gets away with it. quinn get’s heart difficulties.and stays home a lot of the time.matthews retires.and that’s pretty much it.we have a BIG surprice in this season.it is going to be exciting and absolutly fantastic.
