Royal Pains – Only the strong survive

With its season finale just a week away, 'Royal Pains' showed viewers that it can be every bit as dramatic as say, oh, I don't know, that other show about doctors on ABC. What does this mean exactly? It means somebody died, man! Get the Kleenex and pour the gin. It's one of those episodes.

- Season 3, Episode 15 - "Hank and the Deep Blue Sea"

As any avid television watcher can attest, serialized programs usually pull out all of the stops as they head into their season finales. Is that a rule or something? Perhaps I’ll Google it later. Well, as luck would have it, Royal Pains is no exception to this particular regulation. It’s pretty interesting because this show isn’t quite as dramatic as some of the serialized fare of networks like CBS and FOX. No, this program is typically upbeat and jovial which makes it all the more shocking that something so detrimental transpired in last night’s installment.

Instead of just heightening the suspense, let’s just get right down to it — Jack died. Did your jaw just drop? If so, close your mouth before your teeth dry out. I’ll admit that I was surprised myself. I’m not even going to pretend to have expected Jack’s untimely death. On the contrary, I was downright taken aback. You see, when I watch Royal Pains, I never ever anticipate anyone dying. I mean, whenever Hank’s around, people typically tend to live happily ever after. In fact, I’m not even sure that people are capable of dying in the Hamptons. Perhaps it’s a law … that and eating caviar for breakfast.  Nevertheless, the writers wasted no time in setting up some grim drama for the finale with Jack’s bereavement. Who could have seen it coming?

He spent the episode with Jill on the boat. While I was happy to see Jill get a bit more to do in this episode, it became increasingly apparent that trouble was on the horizon. At the conclusion of last week’s installment, Jack was shown vomiting into the ocean. In this particular installment he seemed resolute in trying to hide his sickness although Jill was able to see through the facade … not that it was hard considering he collapsed on the dock. Sheesh.

As usual, Hank was there for Jack when he was taken to the hospital, and once again their friendship was showcased. It was a touching scene as Jack thanked his friend for being there for him, and even though he was visibly frail and obviously weak, I didn’t think for a second that he was going to die. In fact, I thought he had learned his lesson. Sadly, he had to learn it the hard way. What this means for Hank is anyone guess, but if I had to guess, I’d say this doctor may need one himself. I don’t think devastation is the word when it comes to what he is feeling.

Elsewhere, Evan offered Divya financial assistance, but after observing the variety of high quality fashionable clothes she was sporting throughout the episode, I’m thinking that perhaps Evan should keep his money in his piggy bank. Sister girl dresses pretty damn nice for a woman who’s supposedly broke. Perhaps she has a sugar daddy on the side. Now, how’s that for a storyline! Alas, the producers still won’t return my calls. I can’t imagine why.

Speaking of Divya, we did get to see her handle the customary medical case of the week when she dealt with a pretty shop owner with a bad case of liver infection caused by the energy beverages she insisted on drinking. Once again, I find myself wondering whether or not the cases in Royal Pains  can actually happen in real life. Anyone of you have a master’s degree in, I don’t know, health of something? Answer that question for me.

And that’s about it. So, with next week’s highly anticipated season finale looming ahead, we have some questions to ponder as usual. For starters, how is Hank going to handle Jack’s death? What’s the future hold for HankMed? Will Divya accept Evan’s offer? Furthermore, what’s going on with Boris and his shady cousin? That definitely kind of flew over my head. Feel free to sound off below!

Didn’t Divya accept Evan’s offer? What was the envelope she gave to her ex-fiance at the end of the episode?

Divya’s fab clothes also bothered me a bit – always looking great yet she’s broke? I explained it away by assuming they are from when she was being supported by her parents and wasn’t broke. Though if they put her in the same outfits or they were obviously not high-end brands it would make her predicament more believable.

Oh, wow! Is that what that was in the envelope? Perhaps I was drinking too much gin to numb the pain of Jack’s death. LOL I don’t recall Divya saying yes to Evan’s proposal, but perhaps she agreed off screen. Furthermore, I’m so glad you agree with me in regards to Divya’s wardrobe. I thought it was just me, but no, she really does wear expensive clothes for someone who is supposedly “broke.” And you’re right — she doesn’t wear the same outfits twice which means that she is loaded! LOL

No such thing as too much gin.

I love this show, but I think they’re jumping the shark with this “Who poisoned Boris?” story line. As intriguing as it was early on and as anxious as I was for them to bring closure to it, we’re now supposed to believe that “the butler did it”? Seriously? That’s the best they could do?

And WHERE did they dig up the actress who played cousin Claudette? She was achingly, wretchedly, hu-normously bad–was SHE the best they could find?

Thanks for commenting, David. I think the writers are just trying to up the ante for the season finale. I did find the Boris plot to be a bit out of nowhere. I don’t recall it being mentioned in any of the past few episodes, and I also don’t remember Boris appearing in any of them as well. Um, in regards to the actress that played Claudette…well, I do agree that something was off. LOL I just don’t think the plot is needed at all. I thought the show was in a nice good groove. Jack’s death adds a nice dramatic element, but the Boris nonsense isn’t needed. Still, with the season finale airing next week, the writers just want to give us something worthwhile. I guess I can understand that. What did you think of Jack’s death?

Last time we saw Boris is when Hank discovered that he was poisoned with Thallium … and that it was introduced through the swimming pool (that’s when Dieter ran) … as for his disappearance he told Hank that he and Marisa were going away for a while for safety

Thanks for speeding me up to date, Gordon! I was pulling a blank. Did these events happen before the mid-season break or after? Also, what are your expectations for the finale?

February 17, 2012 at 1:19 AM

why not … Dieter had complete unfettered access to Boris … makes sense that he’d be the one to poison him.

I am wondering if Evan now having his shares plus Divya’s shares gives him controlling interest in HankMed and if that will play into things. If Hank is struggling because of Jack’s death, having controlling interest could be just the leverage Evan needs to get Hank back on track.

February 16, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Sam, I didn’t really think of that. I don’t think Evan would use the shares for ill will, but I can see him clashing with Hank in regards to management of HankMed. Furthermore, I do recall a moment in the trailer for next week in which Hank was telling Evan that he was the boss. Now that Evan has Divya’s shares, I can definitely see him responding with “Not any more!” Hmmm… I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Evan does seem to like money, doesn’t he? This is shaping up to be an interesting finale.
