30 Rock – Frank’s love life takes the stage

'30 Rock' turned its attention to Frank this week and his twisted love life, including the return of Susan Sarandon and Patti LuPone.

- Season 6, Episode 9 - "Alexis Goodlooking and the Case of the Missing Whiskey"

It’s not often that we’re treated to an episode of 30 Rock that focuses on Frank. Sure, the title of this week’s episode referenced Tracy and Jenna’s stint as a crime solving team, and Jack began mentoring Kenneth as his post-page career began, but Frank’s twisted love life was the real star of this episode. Perhaps Frank doesn’t come to the forefront so often because he is so pathetic. Just a theory.

I remember last year after Susan Sarandon’s guest stint as Lynn Onkman, Frank’s ex-teacher who seduced him and was sent to jail, I was expecting her to make a bunch of appearances. I had pretty much written the character off at this point when we hadn’t seen her for so long, but it was nice to see her back. I guess I would say that it’s nice that Lynn and Frank are still together after all this time, but like everyone else, the relationship creeps me out a little. With that being said, I hope to see Sarandon again, though I might rather see Patti LuPone back as Frank’s overbearing mother; she’s fantastic.

I’m really curious to see what 30 Rock has in store for Kenneth. With the show now in syndication, I recently caught an early episode with Jack saying that everyone would be “working for Kenneth or dead by his hand” in five years. I can’t help but wonder if the writers are going to develop Kenneth over the course of the season to ultimately pay off on that line. With the series certainly coming to the end of its run soon (maybe not this season, but six seasons is a lot for any show), it’s nice to see a little character growth, and a bizarre ending with Kenneth in charge seems fitting for a show like 30 Rock.
