When Fairly Legal was renewed last year for a second season, it was announced that the show would undergo some changes. Given the false pregnancy scare for Kate and Justin at the end of the first season and their possible divorce, I worried the changes would mean the end of Justin (Michael Trucco). His character was one of the main reasons I loved the show. The banter and on-off relationship between Justin and Kate was a highlight of the first season. So, I was thrilled when I found out Michael Trucco was remaining with the show.

Last month, I visited the set of Fairly Legal in Vancouver and interviewed the cast along with some other writers. During the first season, Justin was primarily seen through his relationship with Kate, but his role will be expanded this season. I can’t complain about more Justin, that’s for sure.

Michael Trucco explains the differences we will see from last season to this coming season,” [Justin’s] an Assistant District Attorney. He’s a prosecutor and he’s a trial attorney, and I wanted a chance to see Justin in his, in his domain. You know, a lot of the time it was on the phone, he’s in his office. It’s dealing with Kate. What I like is that there is a storyline that is growing outside – Justin is just not a singular entity for Kate’s purposes only. There is a storyline growing about the election and running for the office of District Attorney, and seeing him in his element helps me, the actor, get my teeth into this character a little deeper.”

Even though Justin will be seen in his work environment more this season, he will still be a major part of Kate’s life. In the first episode, Justin drops a huge bomb on Kate. It is a shocker! This secret will cause a change in their relationship, as Michael explains, “Let’s just say that that weighs heavily on the direction of the, the nature of the relationship between Justin and Kate. There is definitely a dynamic shift in the paradigm between Justin and Kate. But I think, strangely enough, it’s not what you would assume that that’ll come to be. I think that there’s in some ways that information that, that revelation, ah, it does, in some ways it actually, weirdly enough, I think it almost brings the characters closer together. I think it breaks down a few doors that may have been up before.”

The show will be introducing a new character, Ben (Ryan Johnson), and he will be be interacting with Justin, as well as, Kate. Will a love triangle be coming? Ryan Johnson talks about how Ben will view Justin, “And so when [Ben] finds out … that the ex is an ADA and their paths cross there’s a lot of tail sniffing. And so that’s, that’s fun for Ben because then it’s a lot of chest puffing … and trying to kind of get a, get a rise out of this guy as much as he can, and because he’s so by the book and so stiff, Ben has a field day with it.”

Still need a reason to tune in to the Fairly Legal premiere? Michael Trucco will be shirtless! Good for us, but not so good for Justin. He is shirtless due to an unfortunate event, but in the end it will change the direction of his career.

During the interview, Michael mentioned that he was going to join twitter and he is now there! You can find him @OriginalTrucco.
