Game of Thrones – The Night Lands – My Maiden Voyage Through Westeros

Are you new to the ‘Game of Thrones’ world? Each week, I will review it from the perspective of someone who has not read the series. You won’t find spoilers from the book here, just a review of the show itself.

- Season 2, Episode 2 - "The Night Lands"

Game of Thrones continued to show us all the sides around the big Westeros map. In the second episode, “The Night Lands,” the sides in the battle for control began to take form with alliances formed and rejected.

Kings Landing
While Joffrey may be King, the triumvirate of Joffrey, Cersei, and Tyrion all have power and are willing to wield it when they deem necessary, regardless of the King. I assumed that Cersei ordered the killing of Robert’s bastards, but it turns out that it was Joffrey. That boy, umm … I mean King, is ruthless!

Joffrey needs to be removed from the Iron Throne … as soon as possible. Since I haven’t read the books (if it is even covered there), I don’t have a real understanding how bad the “Mad” King Targaryen was, but Joffrey cannot be better, right?

It’s too bad Tyrion cannot be king. If a Lannister is to be on the throne, he is the one who should hold the power. He made the right decision to get rid of Janos, the Commander of the City Watch, but Bronn as his replacement? I see trouble coming. The show down between Tyrion and Cersei looks to be just the beginning of their confrontation. Would either of them take out the other? Or attempt it? Tyrion is going to have to fend off both Joffrey and Cersei. How fun!

Iron Islands
For the first time, I started to like Theon Greyjoy in the last episode when he stood by Robb and wanted to call on his father to join their fight. That appreciation was quickly removed on his journey back home.

Yes, in general, the men in Westeros are despicable to women. He bothers me more than the others for some reason; maybe it is his unearned arrogance.  He acts as if women are there strictly for his pleasure, whether his redhead “love” in Winterfell, his throwaway woman on the ship, or his unrecognized sister. He may not have known she was his sister, but he gropped her anyway. Disgusting!

Was Balon right to reject Theon and his plan? From what I understand, Theon did not go to Winterfell on his own, rather he was sent there due to his father’s failings during the last war. Theon is a reminder of that and to see his son turned into a Northerner was looked like it was an effective punishment.

Instead of aligning with the Starks, a new front of the war was born in the Iron Islands. Will Balon form an alliance with another of the many kings or fight the battle on his own? Or, will he go as far as siding with the Lannisters?

Dragonstone
Stannis rapidly fell under Meliandre’s spell. This is not going to bode well for him. He went from a faithful husband to wanting to father her child within a few sentences. Wow. If he becomes King, how easily he will be manipulated? Scary!

Unlike the Starks, Davos was able to successfully form an alliance with the pirates to fight for King Stannis. They have 30 ships, in exchange for a share of the riches and … well, Cersei if possible.

Odds and Ends

  • Why can’t Arya and Gendry have their own show? I could watch an hour of them. I’m glad he knows the truth about Arya. She needs someone to confide in and I wasn’t looking forward to a Mulan-type situation.
  • Varys is a sneaky, sneaky used-to-be-dude. Tyrion wasn’t going to play his game, but I don’t think we’ve seen the end of this battle.
  • Jon was one of my favorite characters in season one, but that has unfortunately changed. He has become a hothead and not a very nice one. Sam had good intentions; there was no reason for Jon to be dismissive in such an “you’re and idiot” manner. But, that ending … oh my!
  • I don’t like seeing Daenerys in this dire of a situation. The horse’s return with Rakharo’s head makes their future look even more bleak. I want to see the dragons in action and do something to save them.
