Ten reasons Nikita should be saved

If more than just ratings are any indication (we're talking about The CW, after all), Nikita should be renewed -- and I can prove it.

Liz T is a geek writer, who met her spouse in a comic book writing class. She lives in Los Angeles, where she enjoys freaking out her barrista by changing her order occasionally. You can read her tweets @lizatLAX.

On May 18, the CW will air the season finale of Nikita. That might be the very last episode ever, or it might not. The show will probably not get renewed, but it might. No one knows yet, because no one actually understands how the CW continues to exist with those ratings. But since the renewal decision can’t possibly be based on numbers alone, I have ten reasons why you should watch the last few episodes, buy the DVDs, and encourage the CW by (almost) any means necessary to bring this show back for another season:

1. Great women characters
It’s important to note the plural. This isn’t a show with only one outstanding female character; it has three leading women, in Nikita, Alex and Amanda. They’re all different and in the course of only two seasons they have developed so much. I’m not ready for Nikita’s or Alex’s stories to be over yet; not when we’ve come all this way. Nikita started out as a revenge-driven loner and she’s now a lover and protector, mentor and friend who can still kick ass. Alex has become a strong, confident young woman, who defeated her past. And Amanda? We’ve seen her be cold, we’ve seen her vulnerable; she’s been in command and she’s been defeated. Wouldn’t it be great to see her scheme her way back on top?

2. Great male characters
There’s a trio of greatness there, too: Michael who started as an adversary and has become so much more; Birkhoff the geeky computer tech who found his strength; and Percy, the ever slippery villain.

3. Cinematic action
Even on a shoestring budget this show delivers action set pieces that few others can match. Maggie Q‘s experience and training for film shines, and she demands a commitment to quality in the fight scenes and action sequences from the rest of the cast and crew.

4. Plot twists that don’t forget the characters
The characters make alliances, switch allegiances, seem to switch allegiance, play long cons, and have secrets that make it hard to keep the scoreboard straight. But that’s part of the fun.

5. Rich guest cast
This show has many, many delicious recurring characters in two seasons who need to come back. Several of them look great without their shirts on.

6. Consequences
With great action comes great ethical responsibility. This show never forgets that there are lives at stake, and that those lives include not only the heroes’ lives but those of innocent people as well. (Vampire Diaries, I’m looking at you!)

7. Peta Wilson
If Nikita gets another year, there’s another chance of an appearance by Peta Wilson. And who wants to say no to the idea of two Nikitas fighting side-by-side?

8. Diversity
Nikita has an Asian female lead. Support women of color in leading roles. Support Asian actresses in any role!

9. It’s hot
It’s on the CW, therefore everyone is ridiculously good looking (okay, maybe not Percy, but I’m not here to judge you if you think he’s hot). But it’s also Nikita so they’re actual adults playing adults, not adults playing teenagers.

And if those nine reasons aren’t enough, this should work:

10. The Carrie Diaries may take its place
Save us from vapid young women who live to shop. Save Nikita.

I love Nikita. I’ve been writing about how people need to watch this show since the first season. And, I’m not sure how it is possible, but the second season is so much better!

Each episode is like a action movie with characters that you care about. My guess is that a third season will happen. And, when it is renewed, everyone needs to catch up!

This is SUCH an accurate list. ‘Nikita’ is the only show on the CW that actually has mature and complex story lines and has empowered characters, both male and female. And so true about the innocent lives thing! On TVD it seems like Damon is killing someone in every episode and Elena still swoons over him cause he’s good-looking. Really, CW? This is the only show that doesn’t focus on childish romantic notions but instead has a deep, committed, and intellectual relationship (Mikita).

Save Nikita!!

I agree with your post 100% about “Nikita”. God, there are so many stupid immature shows that should be cancelled. This show has everything. It is well written, storylines are terrific and now that Alex and Sean are getting romantically involved, I don’t think it’s fair for them to leave the fans hanging like this. I’m praying that “Nikita” is renewed for Season 3.

SAVE “NIKITA” AND RENEW THIS SHOW FOR SEASON 3.

This is a fantastic list and I agree with all of it, basically. Especially the bit about the excellent female characters and saving us all from The Carrie Diaries :)

This show and the talented people who bring it to our television screens deserve a 3rd season to properly wrap up the on-going storylines they have created. Let’s make it happen!

It’s all so very true. It pains me to think Nikita ratings are so bad and that it might not survive because such complex female characters who interact with each other are almost non-existent in action genre. I’m sad it is so unappreciated and I’m afraid to hope but maybe a miracle onFringe scale will happen.

I guess this is not known to this site yet.But yesterday Tvline’s Ausiello upgraded Nikita to a safe bet.He must know something good about our favorite show :-)

Nikita is by far my favorite show on TV – I cannot believe a show of this quality could be canceled but then again…….Nikita has all the elements of great television – action, romance, drama and a little comedy thrown in. The action sequences are so well choreographed that I always have to replay – so amazing. But the heart of the show this season are the friendships built around Nikita. I love these characters and hope that it does get renewed for a 3rd season. If CW does not save it, my hope that another station, like the USA channel or TNT picks it up ………….

Last year I tried to save another show called Legend of the Seeker for a 3rd season. It was one of the best shows I have seen in a long while but the ratings were not there and it was canceled. I fear the worse for Nikita, which in my opinion, is the most Amazing show on TV right now. The first season blew me away. The second season has touched me because of all the complex relationships and the way they resolve their issues which are very heartfelt. I would love to see where the writers take us in the 3rd season. Maybe Nikita and Michael will run Division – In the world of Nikita – anything is possible. And I would love to follow them in their journey….

Very good reasons. Especially with the looming specter of replacement fare such as The Carrie Diaries. Ugh. Just Ugh.

NIKITA FOR THE WIN!! BEST TV SHOW EVER IN HISTORY!!!! MAGGIE Q IS SUCH A PHENOMENAL ACTRESS!!! ALL I WANT IN THIS LIFE IS NIKITA SEASON 3, 4, 5 ,6 ,7 ,8 , 9 ,10, 12 ..INFINITY!

April 29, 2012 at 9:12 AM

I couldn’t agree more with everything you wrote. This is a fantastic show that delivers everything one could want: action, thrills, romance, drama, exciting and twist-filled storylines, moral conflicts with depth, layered characters played by a strong cast, complex and moving relationships, powerful and menacing villains, international espionage & intrigue… it deserves to be renewed WAY more than all the teen drama crap on the CW. Especially since, like you said, this show actually has strong and capable women who do something other than try to find boyfriends.

I agree with all points except # 7.

Nikita deserves a third season. The cast and crew bus their asses to put out such a well produced and written show. It has a crap time slot of Friday’s at 8pm when it is NOT an 8pm show. It deserves a third season in a better time slot, CW.

April 29, 2012 at 12:05 PM

I absolutely agree with your ten reasons! I hope the CW doesn’t cancel the show because it is just one of the best ones they have, I especially like the “girl power” since in this show the girls are kicking butt and are not defenseless damsels that need to be rescued. GO NIKITA!!! :D

April 29, 2012 at 12:34 PM

You put it so well and the only reason I can think of for a show this good to be struggling this much is a) it’s on the CW and no one takes them seriously (H8r? Oh Sit? Really?) b) The CW does not promote the show. Since the CW is like an alternate universe network we may get our 3rd season but it needs to be promoted and put in a decent time slot to survive.

April 30, 2012 at 6:42 PM

oh, no, please not peta wilson! stop playing with old fans! they already brought alberta watson from the previous series and throw her away. it was enough!
besides i agree with the rest reasons.=))

April 30, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Perfect list! It better get renewed!

April 30, 2012 at 11:25 PM

TV Line upgraded Nikita to ‘a safe bet, ‘ so I’m not worried. But, I never was. The network president has outright expressed his love for the show on more than one occasion and the CW is looking at more than just ratings when it determines renewal. The only point I don’t agree with is the Peta Wilson one, I don’t think that’s necessary and as a fan of both shows (although, I think Nikita is a far better quality show), I actually do not want that to happen.

May 11, 2012 at 6:43 PM

I just saw Nikita was probably on the scratch list. How could this be? This show has everything going for it and people I know can hardly wait for the next episode. Why do people not like to watch good tv. Please renew. Love it.

May 11, 2012 at 7:51 PM

Nikita was renewed for a 22 episode 3rd season! Great news.
