CommercialClack with Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel proves she's just like the rest of us, using the latest technology to make life easier. Is that a good thing?

Tara: I noticed this commercial the other day, and thought you might want to jaw about it on CommercialClack since you’ve been covering New Girl this season.

Michael: Well … Zooey Deschanel is a bit ditz-tastic in New Girl … but not so much here. She appears a little more “with it” and together, not so airy, not “in character” … you know? That being said, I don’t know … looks like more monkey business to me. A bit like dumbing down the minds of Americans by letting them take the easy way out using phones like this to do some of their work for them.

Tara: I want a phone like this. Zooey has talked me into it. I don’t consider it really “dumbing me down.” It just seems a fun gadget to me.

Michael: *meh* Doesn’t do anything for me.

I remember a time long, long ago before cell phones and smartphones when every single number, every single address, every single facsimile number was embedded in my brain. With the advent of portable phones, I’ve lost my ability to remember a majority of that stuff.

Now? We’re ordering tomato soup from some joint a mile away … and to be delivered no less. Because making the real thing is just too much trouble. Wait … I mean … opening a can of soup is just too tiring.

Tara: Ordering soup from a mile away to be delivered is rather decadent, even if it is raining outside. But she’s a celebrity, remember, so what does she care? Also, the fact that you can’t remember a majority of the kind of “old time trivia” that you mentioned above is one of the best things that iphones offer! That so used to bother me! Asking myself … wait, what’s his number again? Where’s my phone book? Where’s my address book?

Pain in the behind. Now, it’s all just right there in one convenient place. You know? I never had a cell until about six months ago. Now, I can’t imagine how I ever did without one.

Michael: And when you drop it and it goes *boom* in shards and pieces? All that “trivia” goes bye-bye. I’m just sayin’ …

Tara: That’s why you buy a protective case for it, Einstein.

Michael: And … is it just me? Or does Zooey look like she feels completely empowered by using her phone? Maybe it’s not a look of empowerment she has … maybe it’s as if she’s justified in using her phone with the inclement weather, making her lazier than she might normally be just for the camera.

Tara: She’s having a nice relaxing self-indulgent day. Your deal is that you don’t get why girls need to do that sort of thing every once in a blue moon. Her pjs and her soup and her phone that can do almost anything are all she needs. (For me, the soup would be ice cream, but hey … it takes all kinds.)

Michael: We all have different indulgences, I get that. Hers just seem a bit goofy to me. I’m certain my indulgences would be to others.

Tara: You’d be reading comic books and munching liverwurst sandwiches in that scenario, I’m sure. While telling your iPhone to remind you when Bob’s Burgers is on.

Michael: If I had made this commercial, I would like to think it would be infused with a more productive use of the phone than ordering soup and inputting television show reminders.

The one thing I am very pleased with about this commercial is Zooey doesn’t have her phone “dolled up” with pink bunny ears as she does on New Girl. Again … just sayin’ …

Tara: She’s definitely a toned down version of herself in this ad, I agree. She’s lost a lot of the long drawn out Valley Girl-ish sentences that almost always end in the upwards inflection of a question. If that makes any sense.

Michael: Yeah … but a twinkle of ditziness is still present. Along with the “mañana” attitude.

Tara: Holy Moley. Did we just actually (mostly) like a commercial? Color me shocked.

Michael: . . . . .

The one with Samuel L. Jackson asking Siri to remind him to chill the gazpacho and where he can find organic mushrooms is better!

See, in the Samuel L. Jackson commercial, I keep wanting him to add “M-er F-er” to every command.

I, too, have a device that’s ideal for finding out if it’s raining. Astonishingly, it uses no power source at all, and gives me a weather report localized to my exact location and updated constantly. In fact, I have two different devices that perform this function.

One is a window – the other is a door.
