Lost Virgin Diary – Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

What strikes me as clever this week are a tattoo and a reference to a John Lennon lyric, which I believe is a metaphor for everything about ‘Lost’: "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see." Am I misunderstanding the clues, the survivors or a little bit of both?

Join me once again for a Virgin Diary entry on my favorite stranded group of castaways … and no, for once, I’m not referencing Gilligan’s Island.

I’m about halfway through the first season of Lost, and I’m happy some of my questions from my last post have been answered. Phew. That’s partially why I watched so many episodes this week, though. The momentum kept building and questions kept being answered and, before I knew it, I was turned into a bonafide Lost fan. This entry is going to cover “White Rabbit” through “Hearts and Minds” (Episodes 3-11).

What is really making my head spin this week (and I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it, because I’m an over-analyzer or if it was planted by the writers) is Charlie’s tattoo. Just about everything Charlie does stands out to me, because I’ve had a huge crush on Dominic Monaghan since he played a hobbit in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. His tattoo on his arm says, “Living is easy with eyes closed.” The next part of that lyric is “misunderstanding all you see.” Since his character is a rocker (the former bass player for the fictitious Drive Shaft), this reference to a Beatles lyric makes perfect sense (and apparently it is a tattoo Dominic has in real life), but I’ve taken it one step further.

What a powerful metaphor for the entire show! Every time the writers introduce us to a scene or character, it’s like they reinvent the wheel so we then see that same scene or character with a fresh pair of eyes and a different focus. What we thought was apparent or obvious then becomes completely different context and we’re kept guessing. Just who are these seemingly familiar people and what were their reasons for being on that flight?

I’ve definitely misunderstood some of the things I’ve seen so far. For instance, I was taken completely by surprise by the fact that Locke had been previously handicapped. I have really enjoyed seeing more of the main characters’ back stories. I love that I know more about the Korean couple, as I was struggling to like them before when I couldn’t understand everything they were saying. I like Sawyer more and more, though I don’t trust him. He can be a complete ass sometimes, but then other times he makes me laugh, and his story about his letter made me feel pity for him. I already guessed Claire was flying to meet adoptive parents for her child, and I’m happy (although maybe that’s not exactly the right word since she was in a plane crash) that she’ll be raising her baby herself on the island – if they get her back from the mysterious “Ethan” that is.

It’s so exciting to read your thoughts on this series as it unfolds. I loved this series so it’s nice to be reminded of the beginning. So much happens that it is hard to remember it all. Have fun!

So, the questions about Jack’s father and Adam & Eve get answered in Season 6. Along with the sickness (which doesn’t really come up again until Season 6). For as much flack the show got for not answering any questions, I think most of the ones you pose are answered (some sooner than others.)

Charlie and Sawyer were always my favorites. Along with another character that doesn’t come about until Season 2. Oh, and Hurley. Everyone loves Hurley.

I just watched the infamous Numbers episode everyone always talks about the other night, and now that I know more about Hurley, I like him all the more :)

Hi Kim! I love these posts! I just started my fourth rewatch, and every time I see an episode, I discover something new, but there are also aspects of the show I’m realizing I take for granted because I know what happens. It’s so nice to see the show again through your eyes. Thanks so much for sharing!

We’re actually working on a book about the LOST community, and we’d love to get your feedback. Even though you’re just starting the show, you should check out our survey for LOST fans: https://tinyurl.com/nobodydoesitalone.

Have fun watching! It’s the greatest show EVER!

I’m currently watching season 4 on my 5th watch thru. Well, technically I’m on my fifth AND 6th watch thru due to the fact that I am watching it on both Netflix and blu-ray,watch ING all episodes once on each. Its a wonderful show and i seriously doubt that I’ll ever completely stop watching …. love the character development and the multi faceted story line!
