Rookie Blue hangs out on a cliff

'Rookie Blue' tackles another tough storyline as one of the members of 15 Division gets assaulted. But you'll have to wait two weeks until we find out what happens.

- Season 3, Episode 8 - "The Girlfriend Experience"

In Rookie Blue’s third season, the writers have not shied away from more dramatic storylines. We’ve watched the aftermath of Dov Epstein’s first officer-involved shooting for several episodes. Now, Peck’s undercover mission resulted in her assault in Andy McNally’s apartment. But how long will we have to wait to find out whodunit?

I hate it when stories like this are left unresolved in an episode – yes, I know it is what is referred to as a “cliffhanger” – especially when there’s going to be a week off (afraid of week one of the Olympics, but apparently not week two) before the story is completed. I get that it’s a great way to build hype over a hiatus, but for the more impatient of us, that pretty much stinks.

My whininess aside, I loved how this story played out. From Peck’s initial nervousness to the swiftness the bust was carried out to her phone calls to “someone,” my favorite Blue cop had quite a rollercoaster of a ride. I’m dropping the quotes on someone because we were specifically left to wonder if she might have actually called Diaz instead of Collins. As much as I can hope for a Diaz/Peck reunion, it makes little sense to push Collins to the side so quickly after the character was introduced.

One upside of making this story a two-parter is that many viewers will have forgotten about the bartender by the time the case is resolved. If you don’t think the bartender is involved – he’s obviously the killer – then you’re missing out (another upside is that even less people will remember my prediction if I turn out to the wrong).

The rest of the episode was a mixed bag. I adored the bit with Noel and Shaw; these two are often the unsung heroes of the 15th. I was less interested in the arc with McNally and Swarek; his reticence to attend the wedding came across as boring relationship stuff – as opposed to interesting relationship stuff. If I believed his hesitation was only about being afraid to fly, that would be good. But I’m assuming it is more than that, as we seem to be slowly building to some type of stall in their relationship. If that’s the case, add that to the list of things I’m not looking forward to.

Notes & Quotes

  • Was it just me, or did the connection with the “NiceGuy” happen incredibly fast?
  • “It’s OK. You’re moving on, it’s normal. But maybe you just try to move on a little slower; we got really thin walls.” – Epstein

Fair enough, you’re allowed to have your opinions, but ABC/Global chose this hiatus; not the Rookie Blue showrunners.

Aside from that, love to see Rookie Blue articles/reviews and I’m also not looking forward to a McNally/Swarek break up, if that’s what coming.

My comments weren’t a criticism of the show, just the circumstance.

Yeah, I don’t like cliffhangers, but that’s a personal preference and not much more.

Yeah, they didn’t know how the Olympics would come into play when they filmed this since ABC/Global started the season earlier than in prior years. As for the bartender, I think you’re wrong. Based on the attack at the end and the fight scene Jerry has in the Global promo for 309, it looks like the cabbie or the hotel manager rather than the bartender to me. It is a long wait to find out who’s right.

I remembered your prediction. It wasn’t the bartender. Sorry. :)
