A lot of book-Stannis’s actions are described by Davos who is a bit of a Stannis apologist. I also find it interesting that the show only briefly mentions that Baratheon’s Targaryen grandmother, so its not obvious that Dany is their cousin and there could be a family reason for Stannis’s attraction to fire.

Take away Mel and the Florents add a bit of Davos and boom, good king!

He’s trying to focus less on power and more on duty as a means to achieve power. He’s super interesting in that respect

Although the Others have not made any significant move against the Wall the man understands that protecting the Kingdom is more important than securing the Iron Throne.

Although a lot of other characters are instinctively more likeable and relatable, Stannis is one of the few characters who’s doing what’s best for the realm.

Perhaps maybe compare him to Dany? Dany seems far more compassionate than Stannis. Someone with a good heart. But what is she going to do? Invade Westeros? How could invading Westeros and plunging the country into another brutal war, simply to rule, be any more admirable than Stannis’ goals in ADWD?

Stannis was much too obsessed in ACOK and had lost his way in ASOS. but by ADWD he’s one of the few characters I think we should be rooting for. Not for his personality, but for his cause. Because if he falls, and his armies crumble, Westeros will be plunged into darkness (assuming the Others will do just that – you never know).
