Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Harold Perrineau take to the web with new WIGS series Georgia
The ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ actress and ‘Sons of Anarchy’ actor chat about what it’s like to make a series for YouTube.
Having enjoyed the experience of Georgia, would either of them do another YouTube project if given the opportunity? “I would do another web series of this caliber. The people involved and the material were just so good,” Ellis said. “I think projects like this are great. It’s wonderful that they found money to make it happen, and it’s been nice to tell people my web series is launching but they don’t have to tune in at a certain time or even set their TiVo – it will just be there for people to go and see.
“Internet television is definitely the new frontier. It will be interesting to see where it goes. I like the freedom it allows for content and the ease of its accessibility,” she continued.
“Sure, I’d do another web series, but I’d really love to continue doing Georgia,” said Perrineau. “I just find the story and characters fun to play, and fun to watch. I imagine a lot more projects will come to the web as technology gets better and better, so I am fully expecting to do quite a bit more work on the web.”
Perrineau was also one of the stars of ABC’s The Unusuals, a terribly underrated comedy-drama that I revisited earlier this year for CliqueClack Flashback, and kindly talked with me about that late, great series as well. “I loved doing The Unusuals and I am so disappointed that it didn’t go any further,” he told me.
One of his co-stars on the show was Avengers and Bourne Legacy leading man Jeremy Renner, whose popularity exploded shortly after the series ended. Said Perrineau of his now white-hot colleague, “Jeremy and I have been friends for a long time, back when we did 28 Weeks Later together in London. I knew he was going to be a big star, but nobody could’ve predicted how swiftly his star was going to rise. Big up, J Renner.”
As for his own character, “I don’t know what would’ve happened to Leo Banks, but I am sure it would’ve continued to be great, because Noah Hawley is an amazing writer and great showrunner,” he said, adding emphatically, “LONG LIVE THE UNUSUALS!”
Asked which projects of hers she has a soft spot for, Ellis told me that “I adore doing Sunny because the people there are my family (literally, some of them) and it feels so comfortable and homey on that set.” She also “just shot an episode of Up All Night that was great. Working with Christina Applegate and Maya Rudolph was a dream come true — hilarious, good ladies!”
Speaking of other series, since Georgia is WIGS’ first comedy, who are the people that make Ellis and Perrineau laugh? Ellis singled out her husband and his colleagues: “Charlie Day. All the time. The whole cast of Sunny, honestly,’ she said. Her list also includes “Lena Dunham, Artemis Pebdani, Kristen Wiig, Catherine O’Hara, Kerri Kenney, June Raphael, Judy Greer, [and] Melissa McCarthy. I love Portlandia, Ab Fab, Up All Night, [and] Girls, just to name a few.”
Perrineau’s choices include Georgia‘s writer-director Kauffman, as well as “My writing partner, Jeff Phelps, Kevin Hart, George Lopez, Will Ferrell. There are lots of people who make me laugh,” he said. “I love to laugh.”
