Surprise, the only similarities to the novel are the characters Changez(Riz) and Erica(Kate Hudson), who in the novel was a
writer, later was committed to a mental institution. This is the story of Changez, a Pakistani, who graduates from Princeton, lands a great job in New York and starts enjoying the good life. September 11th, his world and the United States changed. Although he claims to love America, while watching the fall of the twin towers broadcast, a slight smiles crosses his face because the mighty America is not so mighty after all. America paranoia sets in and anyone looking like a Muslim is looked upon as the enemy. After being stopped at the airport, detained and stripped search among other things, Changez philosophy changes. He quits his job and returns to his homeland. After becoming a professor his views had changed and his anti-American teaching reflected his new ideologies. Rounding out the cast is Kiefer Southerland(Jim Cross), who hires Changez at the firm of Underwood Samson. and Liev Schreiber(Bobby Lincoln) a CIA operative posing as a journalist. Put The Reluctant Fundamentalist on you must see list.

I think it is a great commentary between the East and West and very relevant to current international politics. Mira Nair is an amazing filmmaker and I would like to see her interpretation of Mr. Hamid’s work.
