(Season 5, Episode 1 – Season Premiere)
“I need you to pretend I can do this, even if you don’t believe.” Meredith to Cristina
It’s really nice to see the Seattle Grace gang again, and there are plenty of fresh storylines to keep me interested. That includes the addition of Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, a military doctor who lands at the hospital after helping at an accident scene.
The sparks quickly fly with Cristina, who’s awed by the fact that Dr. Hunt staples his own wound shut. He seems like a worthy opponent/love interest for her (way better than that milquetoast Burke). I keep picturing the scene in Lethal Weapon 3, where Mel Gibson and Rene Russo are trying to one-up each other with their scars. But does it seem odd that Dr. Hunt could waltz into the hospital and start performing procedures on people? Just sayin’…
Meredith’s droning is already driving me a little nuts. You know, if you’re going to have a relationship with someone, just have it! Don’t go back and forth and over-think things to death. I just want to shake her and say, “Get over yourself! Just do it, for God’s sake!” Let’s hope we don’t have to endure an entire season of her whining. That would be a serious turn-off for me.
It’s getting to Cristina, too, and I’m glad she finally told Meredith to snap out of it. “Happily ever after doesn’t exist!” says Cristina. I beg to diffah, but it doesn’t just fall in your lap. Relationships take some work, as the girls learn from patients Mariette Hartley, Kathy Baker, and Bernadette Peters. Nice to see those ladies on screen together, and they all look great, don’t they?
I’d heard a rumor that Rose was pregnant with Derek’s baby, and oh, the look on his face when she solemnly told him the news, then followed with, “Got ya!” I’m kind of glad she’s out of the picture.
Will Izzie ever be able to stop mooning over Denny and having visions of him? I DO see a future for her and Alex, but that was pretty bold of him, bringing another woman into her house that night. What is wrong with him?! And, apparently, Izzie and George are officially a thing of the past? I thought they were still trying to figure things out there. Guess not. Good thing, too, since that was going nowhere fast.
Looks like both the Lexie/George and Callie/Erica relationships will be complicated. Looking forward to seeing where those lead.
The series seems to be rebooting itself, and the hospital’s lowered ranking (no. 12 in the country) — and the Chief’s pep talk to the staff — is a metaphor for that. However, the fact that they’ve been downgraded from a Level 1 to a Level 2 trauma center seems incredible to me, given all the traumas they deal with week after week. Maybe it’s got something to do with letting people like Dr. Hunt come in and start dispensing medical advice to the doctors, which they then take!
Major WTF Moment: Cristina getting skewered by an icicle that fell from the building. Discuss.
What did you think of the season premiere? Does it seem like the same old-same old, or are there enough new storylines to keep you coming back?
I’m totally into the new commando guy, but I’m not sure if it is going to keep me watching this season. Why, oh why, can’t Meredith stop whining? It is enough to drive me over the edge. Still rolling my eyes about the icicle impalement ….
Oh, do you mean the “magical non-melting icicle?” Why on earth would that make you roll your eyes?
