Kevin McKidd saved Grey’s Anatomy

I was just about to give up on Grey’s. I was tired of too many lackluster episodes, of Meredith whining, of hoping Derek would see the light, of Lexie being too cute, of George being too negative, of Alex being too damaged.

The only things that kept me hanging on were the occasional scenes where someone would tell someone else off  — man, they write those scenes well on Grey’s — and the two or three episodes a season that hit it out of the park. That’s what I remember Grey’s being about, and it is discouraging we don’t get those every week anymore.

Enter Kevin McKidd … or should I say, Kevin McKidd bursts onto the scene, bigger than life, and saves the floundering series. How’d he do that?

  • We have a new character to wonder about and discover his secrets. That alone gives us a reason to watch.
  • A new love interest for Cristina? OK, I for one don’t really care about that so much, just that we get to see McKidd do his romantic lead thing. It’s better than watching poor McSteamy with his complete lack of storyline, or Derek and Merdith settling into the boring.
  • Charisma. Somehow, the Grey’s writers have managed to denude Derek, Mark and Alex of any of their charisma. Derek used to melt the country when he’d look at Meredith in that certain way; McSteamy, well, was McSteamy. And Alex being a womanizing ass at least gave him some personality. Owen Hunt’s got some serious animal magnetism going for him.
  • He isn’t all tough and gruff; he’s got some sensitive sides: he’s respectful, he’s shaking up the way medicine is practiced at Seattle grace, and that’s important.

Now, I am also really enjoying Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s appearances as Denny, but those are going to be pretty temporary, considering he’s dead and all. So let’s hope the writers at Grey’s Anatomy can keep peeling back the layers of Owen Hunt in an interesting way, and weave him seamlessly into the cast to bring out new aspects of their personalities too. We need a little life back in Grey’s, and so far, Kevin McKidd has brought us some, with a promise of much more.

I’m with you on McKidd, but I think that we’ve seen two episode’s too many of having Denny back around.

Yeah, I like McKidd too, haven’t got him figured out yet like the rest of them; same goes for Sadie too. On the other hand, I am getting annoyed with Denny being on there, I know it’s only temporary (at least I hope so) but he’s dead and it’s just confusing, I must have missed something when Izzie started seeing him or something, and how she can feel him and stuff, just a little bit too sci fi for Grey’s.

Well I welcome the new additions to the show such as Owen Hunt or Sadie, even she (although annoying, wild and dangerous) is something new to watch. People should start complaining about ‘too many characters and too many new people’ when series like ER have made it 15 season (!) with that exact formula: change, renew, people come, people go.
No dramas. I still love the original cast, I still think McDreamy is very McDreamy (although I agree that they could give some passion to Mer and Der’s relationship – just because you live together it doesn’t mean you’re boring and there’s lack of passion, not at all!!), McSteamy is hilarious, so is Cristina, Lexie still has potential to grow and change, Alex is uncovering a new part of him we’ve never seen: the loving side. Denny is fantastic too and I think it’s original and surprising that he’s back. Why not? say I! Come on, everyone stop complaining, sit back, relax and enjoy – shows are not perfect, they’re like life: good and bad, boring and great, and sometimes something in between: GREY.

CORRECTION: I meant people should STOP (not start) complaining!
