The Closer – Fritz saves the day

thecloser020209

FBI Agent Fritz Howard may be the most unsung of heroes on TV today. Aside from dedicating his life to fighting crime, he also has to navigate the treacherous waters that are his relationship with Brenda. This week, we were given another look at both of those things. After some rough patches where their relationship was concerned, some good old fashioned give and take seems to have been the answer. In this case, Fritz gives, and Brenda takes, but it seems to be working for them, so who’s to judge? And when it came to fighting crime, Fritz managed to step in and save the day after Brenda was bested by a murderous crossdresser illusionist.

I am really enjoying the Fritz and Brenda relationship part of the story now, and looking forward to the big wedding. The way it has played out feels right to me. Brenda is a particularly strong willed, and peculiar, person. There was never going to be anything ‘normal’ about this relationship. At some point, Fritz saw that light, and he’s adapted to making it work. Sometimes that means that she gets away with all kinds of crazy, but at the end of the day, it works out for the best.

You can really see it in Fritz as the wedding draws closer. He’s as cool as can be. In-laws in town, case going off the rails, all kinds of Brenda drama, and he’s just happy as a clam. He’s figured it out, and it’s all coming together for him. A big part of what makes it work is that they have put in the time to sell the relationship. We’ve been through all the ups and downs along the way and now it’s about to pay off.

As to the crime solving, it was something a little bit different to see Brenda bested by Reyes. I’m chalking that up to a combination of her parents being in town and anxiety about the pending wedding. She was just a bit off her game, as we saw with the she/he shenanigans. Were you fooled by that? I caught on right away, which just made the scenes with Provenza and Sanchez that much funnier. It seemed to be something that Brenda should have caught.

Fortunately, Fritz was there for the assist. It was just a small part of the case, but an important one. And it makes me think it’s something I would like to see a bit more of. It’s tough, because the interaction with the team is so solid. The balance gets a little tricky when the FBI joins in. That will keep it from ever becoming a regular thing, but there is room to get a little more of the crime fighting Fritz in there.
