Real World: Brooklyn – Scott pitches a fit, then saves the day

realworld10I haven’t exactly been kind to most of the Real World: Brooklyn cast this season. Scott, in particular, has rubbed me the wrong way. Up until now, the guy has done little besides pump iron and bitch at Katelynn for not cleaning her dirty dishes. He hasn’t been a raging asshole, but he does have a somewhat condescending way of speaking to the ladies. Don’t get me wrong, the softer sex is often deserving of ridicule; however, his non-stop badgering isn’t going to make them change their slovenly ways.

Scott’s bone of contention last night was Katelynn blowing off his birthday bash to earn some coin go-go dancing. Listen, I may be in the minority here, but the last time I had a birthday party I was 12. I don’t get why adults feel the need to throw their own party and invite 50 friends. I love a good social gathering as much as the next guy; I just don’t understand why a 24-year old would whine incessantly because someone he’s known for two months – whom he isn’t having sex with – didn’t show for his birthday celebration. Am I alone here?

The feud escalated into more childish household pranks. Scott and Ryan moved the living room furniture into Katelynn’s abode. Clever. Katelynn retaliated by laying all the chairs on the floor. Yawn. Then Scott locked the dishes in a cabinet. Ouch. Not to be outdone, Katelynn stuffed the boys’ balls, pool balls that is, into a sack and hid them. Wow. Not exactly the Hatfields and McCoys. This is why this season’s cast is so damn boring. Other than JD’s meltdown a couple weeks ago, there hasn’t been many in-your-face confrontations. What a bummer. I don’t watch this show for its maturity and rational behavior.

I must give the producers props for the way they pasted this episode together. They intercut Scott and Katelynn’s bickering with the roommates’ efforts to plan a screening of the MTV original movie Pedro, which documents the life of Real World: San Francisco‘s Pedro Zamora and his struggle with HIV/AIDS. Pedro preached tolerance and understanding. He wanted people to respect the differences of others. He defined what The Real World was supposed to represent. Unfortunately for the series, it has since failed to achieve the relevance it had during the San Francisco season.

Back to Brooklyn. We learn Katelynn is suffering through a serious cash crunch, which explains her need to go-go dance. She reveals she’s $1500 in the hole and will have to leave the house. Have no fear, Superman Scott is near. He flexes his massive biceps and writes Katelynn a blank check. Her “voice” and “message” are more important than unpaid bills. I agree. Katelynn, embarrased and grateful, accepts his gracious offer. Scott now has a heart of gold to go along with his abs of steel. Damn you Real World! Just when I think I’m out, you pull me back in.

GL the birthday thing is only slightly more insane than giving someone you don’t really know a bunch of money.

Nice gesture, but I have a feeling it’s going to blow up.
