At least we’ll have the comic book continuation. It’s worked tremendously well so far for Farscape, Buffy and Angel. That said, Pushing Daisies charm is so much in the narration, the bright pastels and the whole tone of it visually and aurally that I fear it will be lost in the translation to a words-and-static-images format.
That being said, there’s also that strangely frenetic and beautiful grown-up storybook dialogue that would read just fine. I can certainly put the right voices with the right words. At any rate, since Bryan Fuller pretty much told me (you do know we hang out… oh yeah, all the time!) that the series finale wasn’t going to be satisfying in any way, I’ll be looking for those comics to continue the story.
The geek in me was, well, geeked to see both Gina Torres (Firefly) and Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) guest in this one. Daisies has always been good with the guest stars; I think that’s one of the things I might miss the most. It was always so much fun seeing familiar faces in this bright world. And while Picardo didn’t get to do much, Torres certainly had a meaty role.
As the mother to Emerson’s daughter, she has him wrapped around her finger like you wouldn’t believe. It was heartbreaking knowing that there was no way his daughter was in Lila’s car, but I didn’t expect her to be in Emerson’s. At least he got to see her smiling and waving as they drove away, so he knows she’s well. Probably every bit the trickster her mother is, too.
Simone is a great romantic coupling for Emerson, and a good addition to the Daisies investigative gang. David Arquette has really grown on me as Randy, to the point that I even like him and Olive together. And Olive and Emerson’s buddy relationship was one of my favorite things about the show.
It was nice that we could delve into Emerson’s story at least one more time before one of my favorite little shows transforms into a 22-page monthly pamphlet. I always loved his fantasy of publishing a pop-up book to lure his missing daughter to him. It’s just so crazy, and now it’s going to happen!
There are so many more connections yet to be made, and only one episode left to go. It’s a shame we get such fun additions with Randy and Simone so late in the run. We barely got to know them and now we’ll have to say goodbye to everyone.
