Well… There’s one episode left and so much left undone. I’m beginning to fear that this ending is going to be quite unsatisfying. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. We need to deal with the episode at hand. A lot happened in this week’s episode, the penultimate, of Kings.
I keep trying to go into these final episodes with an open mind, but I can’t help but wonder if this is truly what the season would have looked like if the show had picked up, even for only a back nine set of episodes. I suppose it is no use to wonder about “what ifs” at this point.
With everything that happened in this episode, I have to admit that Rose really stood out for me. She was a force in this episode, as was Susanna Thompson. From the scene with her seducing Silas in the board room, to her refusing to admit to the King’s death, I thought Thompson did an amazing job. I have a feeling that the Queen is going to play a pivotal role in the finale. Over the course of the series, we have seen more and more just how much power she wields. It will be interesting to see if she has what it takes to stand up to her own brother.
And what about that William? He’s turned out to be a pretty dynamic villain. Now if we could just find out what the heck that creepy son of his did…. In any case, William is certainly set up for a fall next week.
Now let’s talk about Jack. What a complicated, and fairly pathetic character. He was obviously so conflicted about wanting the approval of Silas, and also wanting to kill his father and take his place as King. I call him pathetic because he so badly wants to do the right thing, yet he lets himself be so easily manipulated. It seems like a vicious cycle: he wants to be good, but can’t because he hates himself, but he hates himself because he isn’t as good as he would like. I’m interested to see what will become of him in the finale. Will he willingly allow David to take his place as King? Will he end up a casualty in the struggle for power?
Here’s my theory on how things are going to play out next week with Silas. I think he is going to come back with David and he will set things straight inside the palace, doing away with William. Then, I believe he will ultimately do the thing that he promised to do all those years back: he will step aside and let David be King. I believe that he will never reveal himself to be alive to the broader kingdom, instead, he will go back to live with his mistress and their son. Or perhaps, he will wind up in the dungeon in a cell next to his one-time enemy Abaddon. Though David certainly doesn’t seem that cruel. There would be a sense of poetry in that fate, though, wouldn’t there?

It’s hard to believe this great show will come to its end next week. The eloquent language alone was enough to keep me hooked.
I second the love for the rich, formal speech, and had to laugh when William caught himself slipping into the King’s patterns when bullying the Court.
I think Jack is safe, as he already stepped in front of one bullet for his father in this episode. On the other hand, Silas had the opportunity to stay with his real family in Sanctuary and chose to go back to save his country. I doubt he’ll get a second chance at that happiness and fear he won’t survive the finale. (And did Thomasina kill William’s ambulance crew all by herself? Badass.)
Whoever ends up being the new king, I doubt David will let Abaddon continue to rot in anonymity in Gehenna. The old tyrant will probably get a small farm, perhaps in Port Prosperity. Seeing Brian Cox savor Silas’s wine and David’s steak was a true highlight. Another was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern finding fulfillment in their purpose.
Looks like you were right – the series finale of Kings did end up being sorely disappointing. I’m guessing that when they completed filming the episode, they either did not realize that it would be dropped by the network, or didn’t have time to change anything to make the finale a proper one. Essentially, all it did was pull the story’s threads along in ways to leave many questions unanswered for a hypothetical (and now, nonexistent) next season, which they could have wrapped up if they had tried to in this episode. But they didn’t. And it’s going to be disappointing to the few of us who continued to watch the show…
I’m sorry the series was cancelled. the plot runs along the lnes of Samuel so Gath is Philistine I guess (and Gath was the King of the Philistines so that works). I wonder what they would have done with david sneaking into Saul’s tent and stealing his sword? Anyway, David gets to be King after Silas and Jack die fighting Gath. I feel sorry for Michelle since she’s clearly Michal. I wonder how Jack would ahve gone over to David? Clearly this was not NBC’s best year for intelligent programming. First Life, then Kings. It’s a shame
