Community – Now I wish I took Spanish past high school

community 1x02

Maybe it was crazy middle-aged people that I was missing in my college experience, because even though we only saw it in montage, Pierce and Jeff’s presentation was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. Tiny sombreros, a boat with a Native American prisoner, silly string, and a big finish with sparklers? Now that’s what I call a presentation.

What I’m enjoying about Community so far is the fact that while the characters started out as cut-outs, they are quickly becoming multi-dimensional. It’s only the second episode, but already Abed is proving to not simply be an object of ridicule, and even Pierce is showing that he has actual feelings. It was kind of heartbreaking when Britta told Jeff that Pierce offered her $100 to switch cards with her so he could partner with Jeff.

This whole episode was about fitting in, which is something that every college freshman deals with and worries about when he or she starts school. What makes Community so interesting to me is the fact that these people are dealing with it in very different stages of their lives. Didn’t you love seeing Shirley and Annie get together to put on their misguided bake sale?

As silly and at times unrealistic as this show can be, it’s nice that there are still elements with which the audience can identify. Who hasn’t just wanted to “protest the hell out of something” when they first get to college? Everything seems so big and important, and you want your voice to be heard. Community does a really nice job of fitting those moments in around jokes about “tardiness” and “hyper virility.”

Community‘s success is going to lie in moments like these. The Office has become such a monster hit because it’s able to balance surreal comedy moments with genuine heart. While this show isn’t quite to that level yet, for episode two, it’s doing a damn good job.
