Community – Was this episode out of order, or is Britta just that annoying?

NUP_136156_0204

Am I the only one who found this episode to be completely strange? After the episode where Britta kissed Jeff, which was followed by last week’s episode, in which Jeff was sad because Britta was dating some dude and just wanted him to cat-sit or whatever, last night’s episode seemed like we were completely back to square one. In the first interaction Jeff has with Britta in this episode, he says that she gave him a fake phone number. What?

I generally hate “will they or won’t they” relationships, because I find them manipulative and annoying, but at least with this one, we were having a somewhat logical progression. In the pilot, Jeff made it clear that he wanted to get into Britta’s pants, and she turned him down. Then, they slowly managed to build a friendship around a mutual understanding that Jeff still in fact does want to get into Britta’s pants. All of a sudden though, Britta is acting like she and Jeff can’t be friends at all, because he has designs on her. So the only conclusion that I can come to is that this episode was aired out of order, because otherwise, Britta is the most annoying character ever.

Okay, maybe she’s not the most annoying character ever, but if this nonsense continues, it will certainly bring down a show that I otherwise find hilarious and look forward to every week. The way she refused to give Jeff her number unless he promised to use it for non-romantic purposes? Come on. Jeff brought up a very good point in the locker room, when he said, “Look at me, no, I mean look at my face,” and proceeded to explain to Britta that he is an attractive man who could get other women. At that point, it would have been a lot better if he would have ended it with, “So you can take your conceited ass and go jump in the pool,” but instead he reiterated how much he liked her.

Like I said, if this is a simple case of an episode being shown out of order, then fine. I can forgive the awkward character development and go back to liking all of the characters. However, if we have to deal with 15 more episodes of, “Oh my God, you’re just trying to sleep with me!” then, dear readers, I’m not sure even Abed can keep me around for the rest of the season.

The episode was out of order. It was supposed to come before Social Psychology. NBC even showed a preview of it after episode 3, but they showed it a week after Social Psychology.

For some reasons NBC has a problem with airing episodes of other tv shows out of order.

NBC has a lot of problems….

Even if the episodes had been shown in order, a couple of points:

1. We know that the reason Britta told Jeff “you should probably kiss me now” was to pay him back for doing a good thing, so his professor would see him seizing the moment and not fail him out of the accounting course. I count that as a friend thing only. I watched Britta closely before and after and didn’t see anything to telegraph her actual feelings one way or the other.

2. Britta’s fake cell phone number wasn’t something she scribbled on a note for Jeff. Ostensibly, it was a signup sheet of everyone’s contact numbers for the study group. She just knew it was an excuse for him to gain some traction in his courtship of her and shut him down cold, like she always does.

As to the airing sequence, it’s a good thing NBC’s getting out of this scripted show nonsense and concentrating on programming that can be shot and viewed in any order.
