Community – Somewhere out where dreams come true

- Season 1, Episode 10 - "Environmental Science"

I was so happy to see Shirley actually get some screen time this week. I love her, but she’s rarely used for anything more than patting people on the arm reassuringly and saying, “That’s nice.” But this week we got to hear a little bit more about her dream of starting an online brownie company, although I’m still a little unclear as to exactly how it’s going to be the “Napster of brownies.”

It was also fun to see her and Pierce have a storyline together and for him to not be completely creepy. I’ve been worried that they were making Pierce into a one-dimensional buffoon, since he’s pretty much failed at everything he’s attempted on the show, but this episode really shows that he at least knows something.

Shirley was actually having public speaking problems, and Pierce gave her tips that were actually helpful, and he didn’t make a single double entendre about dark chocolate in the process. He must be growing! In any case, I kind of want Shirley to fall in love with him.

Senor Chang also had a big episode, as he got to be besties with Jeff for a little while. I do think that it’s kind of hilarious how Jeff is the be-all end-all of coolness at Greendale (or Envirodale, as it should definitely be called). It’s also nice that they finally admitted what we’ve always known: Senor Chang is such a jerk because he’s lonely and empty inside.

Chang also must suck at life if he let his way-too-hot-for-him wife get away simply because he wouldn’t go dancing with her anymore. As simplistic as this part of the storyline was, watching Chang dance pretty much makes up for all of it.

My favorite part of this episode though, as it so often is, was Abed and Troy. They’re pretty great on their own, but together, they are simply brilliant. Also, they should probably take their act on the road: their rendition of “Somewhere Out There” made me long for Fievel and An American Tail.  Even though the whole storyline was mainly an excuse for Donald Glover to show of his impressively girly scream, I just love any time Troy and Abed are together.

And to commemorate their lovely duet, here’s the video, below:
