Cougar Town’s Bobby is like Joey on Friends, only better

- Season 1, Episode 7 - "Don't Come Around Here No More"

cougartown bobby
Cougar Town is fast becoming one of my favorite new shows. It started off good, but I think it has gotten better, and the reason for that is the development of the male characters. Sure, I’ll chuckle at Ellie and Laurie sniping at each other, and at Jules sticking her foot in it, but the real comic gold for me in Cougar Town is the interplay between Bobby, Travis, Grayson and Andy.

This post is about Bobby, who has become more than meets the eye. At first glance, he’s a two-dimensional dufus who can pull a decent scam. It’s not hard to see past that and realize there’s something under there that attracted a woman like Jules in the first place, and that there is a brain behind the facade. However, he still reminds me of the dippy Joey from Friends (who probably doesn’t have a brain behind the facade) … only Bobby’s better.

Bobby’s love for his land boat is akin to Joey’s love for the dog statue
It’s just weird, right? Although Bobby’s worshiper, Andy, seems to think the land boat is pretty awesome too, everyone else in the cast looks upon it much the same way the Friends cast viewed Joey’s dog statue … “What the …?” pretty much sums it up.

Bobby loves Jules, Joey loves Rachel
Not only do both these guys love a pretty, successful woman, but they both get the girl at some point, then lose her. It seems that good taste doesn’t necessarily make for a good relationship.

Bobby and Joey are both lacking in life ambition
Golf pro? Actor? Can we say “pipe dreams?” Sure, Bobby’s got the record at the local country club, and Joey had a brief flirtation with success on Days of Our Lives, but for the most part, these two guys lack the ambition and drive to become life successes.

Bobby loves the grilling, Joey loves the sandwich
I guess it’s a “men love food” thing, but both of these guys have an unnatural love for their food of choice.

Bobby rides a golf cart, Joey drives Phoebe’s Grandma’s cab
Maybe this one’s a bit of a stretch, but neither of them has a conventional vehicle to get themselves from here to there.

Bobby explodes in the fire and goes deaf (see above picture), Joey jumps on the bed, falls off and breaks his arm
Shall we just call this category “does stupid things and suffers consequences?”

Neither of them could carry their own show
Let’s just hope we don’t have to watch the painful Cougar Town spinoff … just don’t make it, ABC.

What do you think? Do Bobby and Joey have a lot in common, or what?
