“That’s hardly porn, it was a topless woman on a tractor. You know what they call that in Europe? A cereal commercial.” – Phil
Modern Family has already proven that they do so many comedy classics well, like pratfalls and other physical comedy, one-liners, situational jokes and more. Tonight they so masterfully demonstrated the comedic gold that is the mix-up, and wove all three story lines together with the title of this episode, “Not in My House.”
Jay certainly had an unhealthy love for his dog butler (which Gloria did not want in her house), but not quite as deranged as Gloria thought. She caught him pretty much doing it doggie style, professing his love to it while holding its hand and actually beginning a marriage ceremony. They didn’t take it too far, and Gloria’s reactions were just enough to be funny, not at all over the top.
Claire thought that Luke was looking at porn (not in her house!), which was a mix-up, but the two best mix-ups within that story line were the little subtle ones: when Alex thought the dad was hitting Luke instead of playing that hand game with him, and when Claire thought Luke was confessing being a porn-peeper to her, not reading Haley’s diary. These were so well-played that they really could have happened in any family across America, which is another thing I love about this show so much: Modern Family is relatable.
Mitchell didn’t want any of the Latinos in his house because of Cam’s over-helpfulness, but again, we ended up with a great mini mix-up, with the language barrier issues, that eventually ended up in a marriage ceremony in their home.
Other things worth mentioning:
“He comes when you need him. He’s like Batman, but straight.” – Cam, about their gardener
Some part of me has the sense there’s a delightfully dirty joke in there somewhere, but no one in this household gets it … enlighten us!
I think he meant Batman comes when you need him, like emergencies, and the straight comment is because Batman wears tights and hangs out with Robin.
Regardless, this show is epic. Best comedy since Arrested Development, something I never thought I’d say.

Oh, I’m sure you’re right … I need to get my mind out of the gutter and maybe I’ll figure these things out too! :-) They really do have such a groove and it’s such a well-balanced show, I would think almost anyone could find something to love about it.
yea for the batman reference, batman gets a lot of crap for hanging around a young teenage boy in tights and hes always been teased by it, even by some comic book writers. SNL’s cartoon skit, “the ambiguously gay duo” is a reference to batman and robin.
