Fear not, for Modern Family was hilarious this week

Almost every character was afraid of something on tonight's 'Modern Family,' but if you're fearful of irreverent jokes, steer clear of this episode.

- Season 1, Episode 16 - "Fears"

“You never want your kids to see you scared. You want to be that rock the can grab a hold of in a stormy sea. Actually, a rock would sink. So a floating rock.” – Phil

I’ve said it before — Modern Family is masterfully written. This week’s episode was an amazing example of the way they can take the week’s theme, in this case fear, and weave it throughout each micro-family’s story lines. My favorite this week? Cam and Mitchell.

It was a stroke of brilliance the way they brought back the pediatrician, and they didn’t disappoint me by getting all politically correct. There were enough irreverent Asian jokes to keep me laughing happily. Like this one:

“You know it’s because you’re Asian, right? No, I’m sorry, am I just supposed to ignore the giant panda in the room?” – Cam, when Lily calls her pediatrician “mommy” (a gay dad’s worst fear)

Did you catch the pediatrician start to correct them that pandas are from China and she’s Japanese, and then she just gave up? Awesome. They didn’t reserve the jokes to Cam’s faux pas, either … the stereotype of the bad Asian driver — also awesome. Speaking of stereotypes:

“Hey Cam, where did we get this dolly from?” – Mitchell
“Janice and Olivia. They brought it over yesterday. Lily loves it.” – Cam
“Seems a little frilly, you know, coming from them.” – Mitchell
“Because they’re lesbians? That’s sort of an offensive stereotype, don’t you think?” – Cam
“I suppose. I’m sorry. Hey, did they bring back our coffee maker?” – Mitchell
“No, it was too big. They were on their motorcycle.” – Cam

Phil’s fear of the creepy dark space was funny, as was Haley’s fear of the driving test man. Runner-up for me tonight though, had to go to Manny’s fishing outfit. Maybe it’s because my five-year-old asked for a dinner jacket recently, but Manny’s wardrobe is always a source of great entertainment for this weird kid’s mom.

What was your favorite part of tonight’s Modern Family?

Manny dressing up like something out of a Hemingway novel had me rolling.
I now plan to leave fake plastic bones in our attic whenever we decide to move.
