FlashForward – Calm before the storm?

This week's 'FlashForward' felt a little slow. Is it because the season is about to crank the volume up and ride the excitement through the rest of the year, or was it just a crappy outing?

Is it bad that through the whole hour of this week’s FlashForward, I was hoping for Demetri to die? It’s not (exactly) that I wanted to see Agent Noh dead, it’s more that I was so super annoyed with his stupid behavior surrounding his impending doom for much of the run of the series. What would Al Gough say now if he saw all of his friends still acting like the pawns of their flashes after he killed himself to prove that they can be changed? I’m guessing he would be pissed. In any case, it looks like Demetri’s fate is going to be put off for at least a week. Why, why, why was he hanging around LA? I feel like any sensible person would have just left as soon as possible.

Things continued to come together in this episode, with a lot of the blackout visions coming to fruition. Aaron’s story moved ahead quite a bit, as he was helped in his mission against Jericho by Stanford and the FBI in exchange for any information that he can dig up on the shady organization. I’m wondering, at this point, if Jericho is going to be associated with the blackout, or if they are just an elaborate red herring and side plot.

Another important plot point in this episode came with Olivia and Lloyd’s relationship. It’s coming off as really forced to me. I get the sense that Olivia is pushing herself toward the Brit just because she saw it in the flash. I don’t sense any real connection there. Is it because their kids like each other? Because Lloyd held Charlie’s hand when she was hurt in the playground? I’m just not seeing the chemistry between these two. The writers are not doing a good enough job at selling this romance. Not for me at least. Are you feeling it?

With a cast as large as the one in FlashForward, it’s not that noteworthy when certain characters are absent for an episode. For some reason, however, I really noticed it in this installment. There was no Simon, no Bryce, and no Nicole. Maybe it’s because I actually like all of those characters, and likable characters are few and far between on this show, but I certainly missed them. Frankly, for most of this hour, I was bored.

This episode definitely felt like a calm before the storm, and with Demetri and Charlie being kidnapped and things appearing to be coming to a head with Frost, it might prove to be just that. FlashForward needs to build up some momentum for the rest of the season. The climactic events of last week would have given the show a great opportunity for just that, but they were squandered with tonight’s episodel. Will FlashForward be able to get that momentum back and finish strong? Time will tell.

See, I actually liked this episode. While I think Lloyd and Olivia are being pushed together, I still think they have more chemistry than her and her husband.

I’m with you. I get Noh’s commitment to his duty, but the second he decided to skip town, he should have done so immediately.

I also thought I’d hate Janis’ turn, but after another week, it has grown on me. Now, she’s got this deeper connection to Dimitri, all the more reason I think he makes it through next week alive.

Yup I agree with Bob, surely it looks like Olivia is forcefully committing that mistake just because Mark is not ready to move out and she saw/felt the strong feelings for Llyod in her flash forward.

I find Mark and Olivia to have better chemistry. I did miss all the other interesting characters, Simon the CIA guy and ofcourse Nicole and Bryce but seems to me this installment was much more focused on FBI so its fine.

Though it was little slow and calm episode the next week’s episode might be very exciting.

Speaking of exciting (in a Hail Mary pass sort of way), Airlock Alpha has a short article that gives just the faintest hope we may see a second season. I have loved this show from the start and really hope there’s some meat on the bones of this.
