Aw, I know it — the hater’s back reviewing How I Met Your Mother . But only this week, covering for Ivey. And I didn’t hate this episode. In fact, it was the most clever episode in recent history, and definitely this season.
Let me just get the hate out of the way — tiny Marshall on the pee stick was stupid, as was Marshall versus the machines, especially the song. Just Lily’s voice as she called Robin “Sweetie” was like nails down a chalkboard. And no one is going to cry that annoying couple a river because it takes them longer than two months to get pregnant. I think the writers just managed to alienate the entire fertility-challenged population with this one episode. If the ratings slip next week, we’ll know who stopped watching. But awwwww, the “cradle list,” that was so cute … um, no.
Now, to the good stuff, which was pretty much the rest of the episode, headed up by the awesome guest role of Maury Povich as himself … and himself … and himself. In fact, I counted eight or nine appearances … probably there were more.
I say that because this episode was so chock full that you literally couldn’t look away without missing something. The Maury sightings, the flashbacks, the subtitles showing Robin becoming a New Yorker (taking a cab from someone who needed it more, crying on the subway, killing a cockroach with her bare hands … did I get them all?). I’m guessing the script for this episode was longer than most of the HIMYM scripts. I guess I have to thank Bays and Thomas for semi-returning to their unique storytelling roots and delivering this fun episode.
This and that:
Was this your favorite HIMYM episode this season? Did you love Maury? Did you hate Lily and Marshall? The comments await you….
Gotta disagree. Marshall vs the Machines was awesome!
