Lux needs to interrupt this relationship, stat

A relationship on the rocks, one at its birth, and one that ... well ... one that should just die, die, die.

If ever there was an exploration of the myriad imperfections of relationship, it is Life Unexpected. As much as Cate and Ryan want to believe they are made for each other, it is only with time that they are going to realize that things will work out with … well … work. Sometimes, relationships shouldn’t work (I’m looking at you Eric). Then there’s Baze, who is, whether he realizes it or not, just filling time until he can make another run at Cate, whom he is far from over. I’m not sure which of these relationships, if any, will ever work out.

What has been boiling quietly in the background since the beginning of the season finally has come to a head in this episode. Eric, despite being a teacher and however many years older than Lux, has finally come out with how he feels about her. Regular readers of this post (both of you) will already know my reaction: way creeped out. I get that Lux is supposed to be this incredibly mature sixteen year old, but that doesn’t make this relationship work. And, for what it is worth, I wouldn’t like these two together if they were the same age.

I guess my theory that had Baze’s dad and Emma involved in the past is pretty well shot down (though I will still hold out some hope, faithful to lost causes as I am). His cutting her down in front of everyone was completely uncalled for. Also uncalled for is Emma’s idea that she couldn’t hold down a relationship. Hiding behind a fake relationship certainly wasn’t the way to go.

Can Ryan and Cate’s relationship come closer to self-destructing each week? We knew about Cate’s doubts before the wedding, but I was a little blown away that Ryan had his own set of challenges (and by challenges, I mean the beautiful Jaime Ray Newman as “the one that got away”). As perfect as he is written to be most of the time, to see him be the source (even partly) of their marital problems for a change was a bit odd. I’m not sure if Cate and Ryan belong together anymore, anyways….

Notes & Quotes

  • Yes, ladies and gentlemen, “staycation” is a real word.
  • While I had major problems with the idea of Laverne giving Lux a beer, Paige doing the same? Yeah, totally see that happening.
  • The lifeguard in me went a little nutty when Baze brought the bottle of champagne over to the pool … just sayin’.
