Oh, that Watcher.
He’s got something going on.
Something like … oh, I don’t know … an ulterior motive or two?
“Good” ‘ole Dr. Dayton King (Stephen Collins) may be calling all the shots right now, but it will come to pass Watcher (Josh Stewart) has a few tricks up his sleeve.
So far, Watcher’s been marked as a bit of a pawn in whatever grand game the doctor’s been playing. But a screw was turned in this episode, hinting there are some behind-the-scenes machinations about ready to twist things in different directions. One of those came at the dinner date at the close of the episode where Watcher suddenly appeared to a waiting Katie. So all that came before — the rather dippy and awkward tutoring between JJ and Katie … the laughable IM exchanges with the two and then with JJ’s mom Stephanie — well … I didn’t mind them in the grand scheme of things once the last few minutes of the show offered that nice finishing touch.
And there was a hint, too, of Watcher’s underlying plans. Talking with Dr. King about keeping on eye on Stephanie and clan, you felt there might be something coming ’round the bend where The Powells were concerned. That ‘I might have an in’ line was under-the-radar cocky coming from Watcher. I was just about on my feet and clapping when he said that. Finally, some intrigue and mystery instead of angsty familial whinery that’s been more or less dominating No Ordinary Family to date.
Could you feel it? Did you note a definitive shift in the show with this episode? I don’t know how you could you not.
Come on, next week. …
