Off the Map – Clark and Minard form a bond

Another unexpected bond was formed during this week's 'Off the Map.' Unfortunately, though, it comes with disastrous consequences for one doctor.

So, I have to apologize: I’m a horrible, terrible person. I watched last week’s episode of Off the Map, and sat there for almost an hour looking at a (proverbial) blank piece of paper before giving up. I’m not entirely sure why; I liked the episode well enough, but there wasn’t a whole bunch to say.

To summarize last week: I’m with Brenner on the coca fields … It is just weird for that to be normal. I somehow became a fan of Minard and Fuller, and am not exactly sure how, or if they even belong together. Finally, things aren’t looking good for Clark, and anyone who has read an Off the Map post here at CliqueClack knows, I definitely don’t like that. So when you add all that up, and then compare to the events of this week’s episode, it is like the lyrics from “I’m Henry the VII” (Specifically: “Second verse, same as the first”).

That Clark and Minard are my two favorite characters on this show is pretty ironic. Clark was added to the cast after the original Pilot didn’t work, and I hated Minard in the beginning. She was brilliant tonight, though. Clark put her in one hell of a tough spot, but she was right to do so. It is a horrible idea for doctors to treat their loved ones, as much as they might want to. Keaton was a shining example of why. Blowing up on Minard was one thing, but firing her? Not that I have any expectation of her firing lasting long. I am, however, very concerned that Clark won’t survive the season (Another ironic statement, considering the chances of Off the Map surviving to see a second season itself). She came very close to dying tonight … so close that she did die, at least technically. I think, though, that I’ll be able to live with the idea that Clark and Keaton are meant to be together, and will be in their next life (or technically, maybe a previous life, considering when Reconstruction is set).

Charlie’s storyline is difficult to comment on. The only thing that scares more than schizophrenia is Alzheimer’s (Which makes Grey’s Anatomy a difficult show to watch these days). As crazy as it seems to say out loud, he is much better off with Fuller as quasi-guardian/friend hybrid than he his with his mother.

Notes & Quotes

  • “I told her I was working with one of the best doctors around. If anyone could fix her, he could.” – Charlie
“Yeah, I should probably get Keaton to look at this.” – Fuller
“I wasn’t talking about Keaton [they share a long look].” – Charlie
“I’ll see what I can do.” – Fuller
“Why, is Cole busy?” – Charlie
  • I’m pretty sure there was at least two climatic scenes of Lost that were filmed in the same place that our patients of the week crash landed.
  • “Ok well, then you better stop looking like someone just shot a puppy.” – Clark
“I hate puppies … They poop and then sit in your lap.” – Zee
  • Mena really just named that baby chick “Appetizer?”

I love the names Minard gave her chickens. Dinner and Appetizer. Super!

I really liked the story between Clark & Minard, too. This show has actually grown on me…at first I didn’t care for it, but now I think I’ll miss it when it’s gone. I hope the Clark storyline gets finished, at least, before it’s done.

Just when this show is getting good, it gets cancelled.

I’ve become a Mamie Gummer fan (hated her in The Good Wife), Minard for some reason shines in every storyline they give her.

I’ve become even more of a fan of the Keeton/Clark story now that Keeton is no longer the superhero he was with Lily but a flawed man who is in over his head and unable to help either of the women he loves. Firing Minard was an over-reaction (and I doubt it will last long) but he is frustrated that he can’t save either his wife or Clark and now Clark has shut him out of helping her medically. He can’t accept either situation and I think Martin Henderson is much more attractive in this than all those shirtless scenes.

(I’m right there with you on the horror of Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. My best friend is coping with her husband having the former, and I work with the latter.)

The Minard/toeless guy scenes are cute together. Maybe because she’s so awkward and he’s clueless about it.
