Torchwood – Is PhiCorp behind the Miracle?

Now that the new Torchwood team is formed, who are they going to find at the bottom of the rabbit hole named Miracle Day?

- Season 4, Episode 3 - "Dead of Night"

One of the cooler experiences I had at Comic-Con was the Thursday night preview screening of Friday night’s Torchwood: Miracle Day. I hadn’t actually planned on going, as we already had plans, and there wasn’t much point in seeing an episode a day early, when I couldn’t review it anyways. Then I heard the cast would be on-hand just to introduce the episode, so I decided to check it out. It was worth it, if for no other reason to hear John Barrowman introduce Eve Myles as “My bitch with the guns.” I knew I made the right call. Plus, watching this hour with 500 or so Torchwood fanatics made for a great experience.

On top of that, the episode was pretty damn good. The now embiggened Torchwood team needed to stop for a second to examine where things stand (though, they proved that, in true Torchwood form, that when they “stop to figure things out,” they’re still going balls to the wall). Now that they know that that there is some shadowy organization that had been planning for the Miracle, it means that they have something to fight.

Oswald Danes is a character that I might finally be getting interested in, though it is basically because of a connection that he and Jack Harkness have. It is a connection I didn’t realize until John Barrowman pointed it out while we were talking to him in the Torchwood press room: both Danes and Jack have killed children. Jack obviously had regrets; he had to sacrifice his own grandchild to save everyone on the planet. Danes’ act was much more malicious. Jack was put off by Danes’ claim of feeling forgiven, almost yearning for that same feeling. Why that connection matters enough for Barrowman to mention it has got me very interested. Plus, Bill Pullman is incredibly good at playing a sociopath.

So, who is behind the Miracle? Was it something engineered by PhiCorp so that they could make tons of money in drugs sales? Or are they just trying to cash in on something that they discovered was going to happen? I tend to lean towards the latter. If money was the only motivation, it is a pretty poor plan. As we learned a couple of weeks ago, it is only a matter of time before basic human services breakdown, making money an outdated concept. But if PhiCorp did not cause the Miracle, who did?

  • I loved all of the little “translation” problems that Gwen had
  • [Gwen knocks the security guard out] You’ve done that before?” – Esther
    “So many times….” – Gwen
  • “Yeah, I was a Catholic too, once. I got better.” – Vera
  • “City is going crazy.” – Esther
“They’re all out drinking. Nobody knows if its a party or a wake.” – Gwen
  • “Sorry I can’t add to your collection … unless you want a button.” – Jack
“You damage that coat, I’m jumping over this bar to protect it.” – Bartender
  • One thing not shown in the Comic-Con screening was either of the sex scenes, which did lead to a very funny outburst of applause when we found the bartender in bed with Jack several scenes later
  • “You weren’t impaled.” – Rex
“You should have seen the other guy.” – Jack
  • I’m pretty sure it is the Lasker Award, not the Lasker Prize
  • Danes’ transition from demon to hero, in the eyes of the public, seemed pretty darn fast, no?

Funny, I disagree with you on some of these points. I really think the season is going far too slow…the pace is crawling by and very little happens each episode.

I really, really disliked the “translation” scene. Do they really think they need to translate things to us? (Or to the Brits?) I’m sure people will pick up on the idea that “cell phone” and “mobile” are the same, and no one cares of lemonade is “fizzy, fizzy” in Wales.

I adore Torchwood. Children of the Episode was one of the best things on TV I’ve ever seen. But I’m disappointed so far with this season, and I hope it picks up soon.

I don’t think it is funny, people disagree with me all the time … Just ask my ex-girlfriend(s).

I’ll be the first to say that my appreciation for this episode could be completely biased by the crowd that I first watched it with.

You’ve got to remember that this is a US-afied version of Torchwood. I don’t even mean just the location, and half the cast. Just look at the credits … It looks like a Who’s Who of former Angel staffers. (Which is a good thing, IMHO).

I can only imagine what a pain in the rump it is to craft a story when every time you tell one, it has to be told at a different length. Children of Earth WAS great … But how much better could it have been at 7 hours … or 10? But maybe when you get to 13, it might run a little long.

So the pacing of this series, as a whole, is (as it always has been) off. If I haven’t gotten past that particular flaw in Torchwood, I wouldn’t have lasted this long :P

I’m only 2 episodes in, but so far I have to agree with Jen a bit, although that is not my biggest problem at this point. With regards to what I’ve seen so far, the original Torchwood members are merely reacting to events rather than driving the action, at least to a lesser degree than I expected. There hasn’t been *nearly* enough Jack, and especially Gwen, so far for my tastes or expectations. That’s not to say I’m not enjoying this series, I’m just not enjoying it nearly as much as I expected I would.

And the whole “translation” issue you guys speak of I find a bit insulting. I figured out how to educate myself on things like differences in language and customs a long time ago and I’m not particularly bright. Anyone could pause the show for a minute (Yeah, I said pause. Who watches live any more?) and do a quick googling of anything they’re confused about. It’s how I do it…and I’m an old fart! Offering some kind of cultural translation just seems like pandering to laziness to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ever giving up on this show. Not every episode/series can be the best and I’ll be supporting it fully. I only criticize because I care. ;o)

After watching the 3rd episode last night I had to say that it was the first one where this series is beginning to feel like “Torchwood” proper. Finally Jack is running things (at least as much as Gwen lets him!) and Gwen is kicking some butt. I do feel that while the translation scene was completely unnecessary it was handled better than I had feared. BTW, why the *hell* isn’t US lemonade fizzy?!! That would be so much better than the flat crap forced upon us and I might actually enjoy the beverage were it bubbly. Alright, I’ll come down from the roof now…

Got episode 4 hanging in wait and for the first time this series I’m really looking forward to seeing a new episode. That’s a good feeling, but it’s tempered by the crap I read about it being possibly unlikely that more Torchwood will be coming in the near future. Great show, great ratings, people are too busy and/or picky to agree on a storyline so we all take our toys and go home? Boo!

Yes I can confirm that England does not have flat lemonade. I actually quite enjoy the fizzy stuff myself :)
